  1. A Demonstration and Discussion of YouDescribe Joshua A. Miele, Ph.D. Director, Smith-Kettlewell Video Description Research and Development Center (VDRDC)

  2. YouDescribe • Why? • So blind students have access to YouTube’s educational and cultural resources. • Who? • You will describe -- Teachers, family and friends. • Blind viewers everywhere will listen to your descriptions!

  3. How it works:

  4. Inline Description • Description on TV and theaters is inline. • Brief descriptions inserted between dialog and important audio. • Very challenging writing and production.

  5. YouDescribe Uses Extended Description • Video pauses for description, then resumes automatically. • Easier to insert descriptions without interrupting. • Much easier for amateurs!

  6. Warning: Construction Zone • YouDescribe is a work in progress • Constant Change  Constant Improvement

  7. Funding • Department of Ed OSEP Grant #H327J110005 • NIH Grant #1R01EY020925 *This presentation does not necessarily represent the policy of the U.S. Department of Education and you should not assume endorsement by the Federal government.

  10. Discussion Questions • How can the increasingly important video-based instructional materials of the future be made accessible to blind and visually-impaired students, particularly in the context of limited educational resources? • How can we develop video description tools that serve all learners? • Does video description have benefits for learners other than those with visual disabilities?
