Los antropólogos e historiadores han estudiado esta cuestión y, al día de hoy, hay tres teorías primarias: la teoría subjetiva, la teoría evolucionista y la teoría del monoteísmo original. La teoría subjetiva enseña que la religión se origina con el hombre. Los humanos tienen una necesidad psicológica de un ser trascendente que brinde significado y esperanza a su existencia en este vasto e impersonal universo. Quienes adhieren a este punto de vista creen que este carácter religioso existe por debajo de nuestra conciencia consciente. Las culturas tienen distintas visiones de la realidad de acuerdo con su experiencia, pero la conciencia y el deseo de la religión es un fenómeno universal. Por lo tanto, concluyen que esta disposición yace en nuestro subconsciente. xUI
