  3. Causes of Crash • Stocks rose too fast • Wages for workers fell • Poor couldn’t buy goods • Farm prices lagged

  4. Crash Came October, 1929 • Stocks dropped drastically • Banks began to fail • People lost jobs, homes, and hope

  5. Roosevelt’s New Deal Helped • Presented legislation to make banks stronger • Created National Industrial Recovery Act (NIRA) • Developed Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)

  6. Other Acts Were Introduced • Home Owners Loan Act • Farm Credit Act • Social Security Act

  7. Some Efforts Failed • NRA--National Recovery Administration • AAA--Agricultural Adjustment Act

  8. The End of the New Deal • Seemed to be working, so Roosevelt cut funding • Hitler’s Germany posed a threat, and the war economy grew

  9. New Deal Achievements • Provided jobs and prevented total economic collapse • Restored citizens’ faith in Democracy and Capitalism • Helped create a more sympathetic U.S. • Convinced people of the value of shared sacrifice
