  3. Naviance- Planning for the future • NEW! Register for courses this year! • Personality and Career Interest surveys • Career Exploration • College Exploration • Electronic folder to log activities and build resume • Information of Careers: education, salary, and future projection • Scattergrams • Parents may sign in and monitor student progress (link located on OHS website- oakmont.org)

  4. How to read a transcript

  5. RJUHSD Goal- All students will complete the A-G college admission requirements by the time they graduate. A History/Social Science 2 years required B English 4 years C Mathematics (including at least Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2) 3 years required /4 years recommended D Laboratory Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, etc.)2 years required /3 years recommended E Language other than English (the same language)2 years required 3 years recommended F Visual and Performing Arts (dance, drama/theatre, music, visual arts) 1 year G College Preparatory Elective (chosen from the a-f areas above)1 year1 year – more required for highly competitive colleges Total: a minimum of 15 classes

  6. SAT tests • Verbal = 200-800 Math = 200-800 Writing = 200-800 SAT Subject tests no longer required for UC but recommended for some STEM majors. Check with individual colleges. Register on collegeboard.org

  7. ACT Tests(recommended for BYU and Cal Poly SLO) • Scores based on number of right answers • All sections: 1-36 • ACT Composite 1-36 (Average of 4 tests) • Must also register for writing portion • Register on act.org

PSAT results have just arrived! • To predict SAT success add a zero to each test score (i.e. 35=350, 40=400, 55=550) Add all three scores for predictive SAT score (1300 total for above example) • Read Improve Your Skills section • Individualized practice questions are available on SAT website for SAT preparation.

Intervention- How to get extra help • 5th Period -Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays in the OHS Library from 2:45 - 3:45.  • Math Center - staffed by teachers and open 2:45 to 3:45pm Tuesday through Thursday in room P-25 or 111. • Individual Student Math Tutors Some are fee free and others do charge an hourly rate. Contact counselor to obtain list of qualified tutors. • Assistance for Spanish speaking parents and help with English Language Learners are available with Ms. Damian in room 503 or ndamian@rjuhsd.us or 916-782-3781 extension 2503. • Guidance Counselors are assigned by alpha: A-G Mrs. Lacoste, H-O Ms. Perkins, P-Z Ms. McHugh, Special Education Students A-Z Mrs. Benavides, English Language Learners A-Z Mr. Morgan

  11. Typical Junior Year Expenses • Prom – tickets, dress, tuxedo, dinner… • Yearbook – orders due January 31. Form on website (Applications and forms– click other) • Summer activities – College programs (UC Cosmos…), volunteer work, college classes, part-time job, learn a skill, practice a talent, job shadow, visit colleges

  12. Staying Focused • Attend College Presentations/workshops • Utilize Naviance • Review transcripts • Check Home link • E-mail Teachers with concerns/questions • 260 credits required for graduation • Credit Recovery • Visit College Campuses

  13. Div 1 Athletics in College? NCAA “2.3 OR TAKE A KNEE” • Graduate from high school • Complete 16 Core Courses, including 10 before your seventh semester • Earn a minimum 2.300 Grade-Point Average in core courses to compete in first year of college • Earn a combined SAT or ACT score that matches your core-course GPA on the sliding scale. • NCAA.org – to enroll

  14. Applying to Four Year Colleges ? CSU application timeframe (Oct-Nov) UC application timeframe (Nov) Private Colleges timeframe (varies) Need a letter of recommendation? (*** Please submit brag form to teachers/counselors with 3 weeks prior notice)

Preparing for Four year colleges continued… • Build upon special abilities and interests • Move to leadership positions in clubs • Continue involvement in community service • Continue with rigorous course load senior year • Take ACT or SAT in May or June 2014 and retake in Fall senior year, if needed
