Go through this slide show to find out how I can help. • These 9 slides are designed to be read in sequential order. • Slide 6 describes my background (‘Why Work with Me’). ‘Testimonials’ follows, on Slide 7, and Slide 8 has an invitation to contact me. Slide 9 has a short Chinese language statement . I can also communicate in Spanish and German.

  2. Who Benefits • You are a business person and need to develop more confidence and accuracy in speaking and in expression. You also need to better understand the culture. • You are a State Department foreign service officer or you hold some other diplomatic or official position. You already speak Mandarin, but you would like to improve your fluency and pronunciation during a six-month furlough. • You are a physician, researcher, or scientist who already speaks Mandarin, but you need to communicate better with your Chinese counterparts. Alleviating (or even completely eliminating) more or less serious pronunciation problems, and improving your spoken expression, will allow you to have more effective contact with native speakers. NOTE: Motivation is critical – if you truly desire to improve your language skills but you are not driven by a work-related need to communicate, I recommend that you take a refresher course and seek out Chinese-speaking friends for practice.

This program will address your fluency, pronunciation, and cultural knowledge. As you go through this program, you will gain valuable practice in conversational Mandarin. By the way, if you only want instruction in voice and standard pronunciation, or if you only want conversation practice, then please say so.

A significant part of this program will be our communication via phone and Internet. We should learn from each other too. I enjoy learning from others–so feel free to challenge me with words or expressions that I may not know (and there are many).

  5. My Tutoring Program Getting Started Think of yourself as an advanced piano player. Think of me as a workshop instructor. I will help you to improve. We will speak on the phone, and I will send you a short quiz. This quiz will help me to determine your language skills (intermediate or advanced, etc.). It will help me determine your specific needs. When we first communicate, I will ask “How are you with the four tones?” (Some linguists say that there are five tones.) You may wonder why is it that I ask. You might think ‘I am good with the tones’ and you might think ‘I’ve never been good with the tones’. It is not as simple a question as it appears to be. My answer to you right now is “Because … I’ll tell you more when we speak.”

I can also communicate in Spanish and in German. NOTE: When talking on the phone you may notice that I have a speech impediment. This impediment is more apparent when I speak in English. And, accordingly, I have a slow deliberate manner of speech Your patience will be greatly appreciated. • My Mandarin is very standard and has a mild Beijing accent • I have very good knowledge of the principles of modern language teaching. I have experience in language instruction.
