  2. Darwin’s Voyage on HMS Beagle • Darwin dropped out of medical school because he did not like the brutality of surgery (no anaesthetics!) • He was sent to Cambridge University to become a priest. • He made friends with John Henslow, a biology professor who later invited him on the voyage of the HMS Beagle.

  3. Darwin’s Voyage on HMS Beagle • Darwin was a keen geologist! Hecollected many plant and animal specimens, rocksand fossils and made some important discoveries about how reefs form atolls. • The strange creatures of the Galapagos islands (especially the finches) inspired Darwin to work out how evolution works.

  4. Darwin’s Voyage on HMS Beagle • Darwin collected many birds from the different islands. • He thought that they were different species as they were so different to each other (beak shapes) • He realised how similar they were to the South American birds, and started to work out how they might have changed into new species.

  5. Darwin’s Voyage on HMS Beagle • Darwin worked on his ideas for many years, before publishing his work (20 ish years) • He published his ideas at the same time as Alfred Wallace, who had been studying apes in the Indonesian rainforests. • His ideas went against Christian beliefs and were not widely accepted

  6. Darwin also suggested that humans evolved from apes. These ideas were not accepted well!
