  3. Government imperatives & policy • Federal & WA Governments support building on comparative advantage in energy & minerals • Aim to improve OECD rankings on collaboration on innovation & returns on research investment • Federal Government Science & Innovation Agenda December 2015 (PM & Minister Pyne at launch pictured) includes 6 ‘industry growth centres’ with Oil and Gas & Energy Resources based in Perth with WA:ERA

  4. Industry R&D ecosystem • Evolving Perth ecosystem includes hackathons, collaborative spaces, JIPs, & WA:ERA partners- commercialisation of R&D is a big challenge • WA Premier Colin Barnett (L) as Minister for Science has tasked Chief Scientist, Professor Peter Klinken (R) with 2016 strategy development

  5. WA:ERA • WA:ERA JV from September 2003 based at Perth Technology Park • Capability building across CSIRO, UWA and Curtin University in a geographical ‘precinct’ • Subsurface technologies, Offshore Facilities& Gas technologies initial focus & still at core

  6. Precinct: location & capability LNG18 UWA CSIRO, WA:ERA,PAWSEY & NERA CURTIN

  7. CSIRO • Commonwealth Scientific & Industrial Research Organisation 1916 • 2015-16 budget c.A$1.5 billion>5000 staff & 50 centres Australia & overseas and ranked top 1% in 14 of 22 research fields • Energy Group in Perth at ARRCTechnology Park site and beyond

  8. University of Western Australia • The University of Western Australia: established 1911 • c24,000 students - 2000 research higher degree, mostly PhDs • Major research focus - minerals & energy among six strategic research priorities • Top 100 world university

  9. Curtin University • Curtin University of Technology established 1986, WAIT 1966, School of Mines 1900 • >50,000 students & 9 campuses >2,000 higher degree by research students • 4 research themes: minerals & energy,ICT &emerging technologies, health, & sustainable development

  10. Industry Alliance Partners • Woodside, Chevron & Shell fund WA:ERA R&D projects • The partners support professorial chairs at Curtin & UWA in Petroleum Geology,Gas Process Engineering, Corrosion, Petroleum Geoscience, Computational Geoscience, BIM & LNG Productivity, Offshore Engineering, Offshore Structures, Palynology, and Leadership • WA:ERA welcomes R&D collaboration from LNG 18 delegates

  11. WA:ERA Collaboration • Collaboration is the cornerstone of WA:ERA success & credibility with government & industry • R&D collaboration provides better service for customers to address local problems and challenges and working together typically leads to a higher quality and more innovative result • Framework agreements help facilitate project contracting and simplify dealing with intellectual property • WA:ERA’s track record and Perth as a centre for LNG and diversified resource R&D was a key to our tender success for the ‘NERA’ Oil & Gas Industry Growth Centre headquarters

  12. Pawsey Supercomputing • In addition to the Square Kilometre Array project, the Pawsey Centre on the ARRC WA:ERA site provides important geoscience supercomputing capability for WA:ERA partners and collaborators

  13. Some recent WA:ERA research themes • Gas process engineering & the future of LNG • Corrosion, reliability engineering, hydrates, MEG &flow assurance • Offshore floating facilities including FLNG, Remote Operations & Subsea Engineering • Predictive data analytics, Internet of Everything, LEAN, Building Information Modelling & LNG productivity (CATRINA) • Carbon Storage & the National Geosequestration Laboratory • Baseline ecological data, prospectivityand monitoring

  14. Gas process engineering & LNG Futures • UWA Professors Eric May & Mike Johns won a 2015 Australian Research Council grant for a new Training Centre for LNG Futures • Industry collaborative support from Clough, Chevron, Woodside, Shell, GE Oil & Gas, Samsung, Guodian NETRI, Virtual Materials Group &Daewoo • Formal Ministerial launch 5-7pm on Friday 15 April at UWA UWA Professors Mike Johns & Eric May

  15. Corrosion, Flow Assurance & MEG • Curtin MEG & flow assurance • CSIRO flow loop • UWA expertise & collaboration Chevron MEG Bench-Top Regeneration and Reclamation Plant at Curtin Hydrate research loop at the CSIRO ARRC site

  16. Offshore floating facilities & systems • Australian Research Council Centre for Offshore Floating Facilities 2015 grant to UWA EMI-Shell Winthrop Professor David White • Industry collaborators Shell, Woodside, Lloyds Register, Bureau Veritas leveraging strong capability, eg UWA COFS • Ministerial launch 5-7pm 15 April at UWA • Curtin & CSIRO related strengths also UWA Professor David White Shell Prelude FLNG

  17. Data Analytics & Productivity • Under our NRSP umbrella, Curtin, CSIRO & UWA have initiated a Resource Data Analytics Project to assist resources industries led by Professor Andrew Rohl as Director of Curtin’s Computation Institute • CISCO ‘Internet of Everything’ Centre launched at Curtin in 2015 • Major Woodside support as well as in LNG productivity initiatives like ‘project Echo’ broadened to ‘CATRINA’ led by ProfessorWang • Strong UWA & CSIRO (eg Data 61) capability Curtin Professors Andrew Rohl and Xiangyu Wang

  18. National Geosequestration Laboratory A$48.4m Federally funded NGL launched July 2015 - WA:ERA oversight

  19. National Geosequestration Laboratory • South West Hub CO2 Flagship on-shore led by WA Department of Mines & Petroleum appointed WA:ERA as its research partner • Responsive to O&G industry, egmassive Gorgon project led by Chevron • CCS is a key to help meet COP21 targets • Research and training programs, public outreach, communication and risk analysis www.ngl.org.au Dr Linda Stalker CSIRO, NGL Science Director
