  2. Guiding Questions • When does algebra come about in your day-to-day life? • Why is it important to understand these algebraic concepts? • How can solving systems of equations help to make problem solving easier?

  3. OFFLINE TEXTS

  4. Algebra 1Bellman, Allan E., Sadie C. Bragg, Randall I. Charles, William G. Handlin, Sr., and Dan Kennedy. Algebra 1. Upper Saddle River, New Jersey: Pearson Education, 2004. Print. • This 800+ page textbook is a high school level algebra book. I chose this book because it is easy for students at the high school level to comprehend, and contains all of the topics necessary to be taught in an algebra course. While it is easy to understand and learn from, it also offers problems which challenge the above average students. It offers a variety of problems which fully demonstrate the importance of these topics and the subject of algebra.

  5. Algebra Practice WorkbookPrentice Hall Algebra Practice Workbook. Upper Saddle River: Prentice-Hall, 1998. Print. • This practice workbook by Prentice Hall gives the students an excellent opportunity for more practice with solving these types of problems. Seeing that this workbook is also by Prentice Hall, just like the textbook, the problems correspond perfectly in order with the sections of the book. This makes it convenient for the students and easy to follow along.

  6. ONLINE TEXTS

  7. Math Playground: The X Detectives"The X Detectives." Math Playground. MathPlayground.com, 2012. Web. 11 Feb. 2013. <http://www.mathplayground.com/XDetectives/XDetectives.html>. • This game, found on the Math Playground website, involves solving systems of equations. While this website contains a variety of games on many different topics, this one is appropriate with the concepts regarding solving systems of algebraic equations. It allows the students to interact online while solving systems in fun ways that they may find relate to their everyday life.

  8. Math TV Videos"MathTV - Videos By Topic." MathTV. MathTV, 2008-2013. Web. 11 Feb. 2013. <http://www.mathtv.com/videos_by_topic#>. • This website, MathTV.com, gives excellent tutorials on solving any type of algebraic problem. It allows you to choose a topic, in this case, systems of equations, and watch a variety of problems being done on a white board, step by step. It’s important for students to have extra practice while at home, and if they were to forget how to go about solving a specific problem, this can be very useful in figuring it out. Not only does it offer a section on systems of equations, but shows examples involving every possible way to solve a system.

  9. TeacherTubeDeRitter, Paul. "Solving Systems of Equations Graphically." TeacherTube. N.p., 2007. Web. 11 Feb. 2013. <http://teachertube.com/viewVideo.php?video_id=3079>. • TeacherTube is also another excellent source of video tutorials. In mathematics, it is especially important for the students to visualize each problem, step by step, as these videos demonstrate. This particular one I’ve chosen goes over the concept of solving a system of equations using the graphing method. This method will be used often and this video gives a clear explanation of how to go about doing so.

  10. Simultaneous Equations"Simultaneous Equations." Fun Maths: High School Math. FunMaths, 2000-2011. Web. 11 Feb. 2013. <http://www.funmaths.com/worksheets/math_algebra_01.htm>. • This worksheet is from the website FunMaths. The website contains an incredible amount of printable math worksheets pertaining to every subject and every grade level. This specific worksheet involves using the given axis to solve the given systems of linear equations. It is the perfect worksheet to go along with the unit on systems of equations, particularly relating to the graphing method.

  11. Solving Systems of Equations"Solving Systems of Equations Graphically." Online Math Learning. Onlinemathlearning, 2005. Web. 11 Feb. 2013. <http://www.onlinemathlearning.com/solving-systems-equations.html>. • This website, Online Math Learning, contains many appropriate worksheets, activities, videos, and games. This page I’ve selected in particular, shows video tutorials on every different method of solving systems of linear equations. This is great extra practice for the students and gives them more visual aids that could be useful while studying and completing assignments.

  12. Online Math Learning"Solving System of Equations by Addition or Subtraction." Online Math Learning.N.p., 2005. Web. 11 Feb. 2013. <http://www.onlinemathlearning.com/system-of-equation.html>. • This is another worksheet containing excellent practice regarding solving systems of linear equations. Also found on the Online Math Learning cite, it gives the students many problems to try, as well as allowing them to check their answers to see if they have completed the problems correctly. This is just one worksheet I’ve chosen, however, I could have chosen many others as well, all involving different methods of solution. • (This graphic only shows three of the ten problems that are on the worksheet)

  13. Practice Word ProblemsRoberts, Donna. "Applied Practice with Systems of Linear Equations." Algebra Practice Page. N.p., 1998. Web. 11 Feb. 2013. <http://www.regentsprep.org/Regents/math/ALGEBRA/AE3/PracWord.htm>. • This is a great worksheet with examples of word problems involving systems of equations. It’s important for students to be able to relate these algebraic concepts to real life situations. These problems are great practice in applying systems of equations to situations that they would recognize from things that may go on in their lives. This worksheet also gives the students the opportunity to view the correct solutions as well as view all of the steps involved.

  14. MathScore"System of Equations Substitution - Sample Math Practice Problems." MathScore. Accurate Learning Systems Corp, 2010. Web. 11 Feb. 2013. <http://www.mathscore.com/math/practice/System of Equations Substitution/>. • This is another excellent resource for practicing solving systems of linear equations. It gives the students the opportunity to demonstrate their answers in different ways. It offers a lot of practice and displays the answers as well as all of the steps required in solving each problem. This is the most challenging of all of the worksheets I’ve found so far, which will be good to give the students a little bit of a challenge.
