  3. Our upcycling project is the Solar Powered Bottle Bulb. Using the solar bottle bulb is an innovative way of lighting up homes in parts where there is no electricity.

  4. Alfredo Moser was a Brazilian mechanic that invented the solar bottle bulb. One day he was just looking for a way to light his workshop during a blackout. With just a plastic bottle, water and bleach Moser found a way to produce a light of up to 60 watts of power.

  5. The plastic bottles are upcycled in the local community, so no energy is needed to gather, shred, manufacture or ship new bottles. The solar bottle bulb emits no carbon dioxide so does not pollute the atmosphere and also reduces the dangers from faulty electrical connections that cause devastating fires.

  6. It costs approximately $1 to make the bulb and it lasts for 5 years. People in poor areas are also able to grow food on small hydroponic farms, using the light provided by the bottle bulbs. Jobs have also been created and a programme has been made teaching people how to make the bottle bulb and install it.

  7. This simple innovation is not perfect as the bulb does not work at night. However the advantages are overwhelming for communities that are deprived of daylight. It is surprisingly effective, using cheap and locally available materials that provide light for the poor people in these settlements.

  8. A project called the ‘Liter of Light’ uses the idea of the solar bottle bulb from Alfredo Moser to help many countries around the world such as India, Egypt, the Philippines, Bangladesh, Switzerland and many more.
