Ball Handling Discussion • Over Control = Lift • Under Control = Double • Coaches want ball handling called, but when determining your margin, call to the level of the best setter in the match • Coaches can only expect consistency throughout a given match – not between officials because ball handling recognition is a subjective art • “Ugly” is not defined in the rules book • DO NOT CALL DOUBLES ON FIRST CONTACT UNLESS TWO COGNITIVE ACTIONS TAKE PLACE TO CREATE THE DOUBLE CONTACT

  5. Problem Plays and Situations • Illegal substitutions • Lines calls • R2 responsibilities to control the benches – e.g. “Coach A is complaining about ball handling by the R1 (as R2 you agree/as R2 you disagree)” • Other situations?

  6. Game Management • R2 - control the benches, but support your partner • Pre-match discussion is essential • Maintain eye contact with your partner at key times during the play and during dead balls • Visit R1 during dead balls only as necessary • R1 – Consistency and remember your R2 and Line Judges are there to support you – look at them and use their input • Use cards as a last resort • Use whistle as a tool for control • R1 and R2 – listen first, then make your judgment

  49. CHRVA Clinics • Unless otherwise noted, the clinics should start at 8 AM. If a different time is provided, you will be notified. Below is the listing of clinics. Plan on attending all day (6 or 7 hours) if you are a new USAV referee candidate or your certification has lapsed. Please bring a bag lunch with you. If you are recertifying, you should know the drill. If not, contact Rick Dubois.
