Field and Laboratory Safety • The Department provides the commitment and opportunity to implement and maintain safe and healthful work environments for students, faculty, and temporary employees performing field and laboratory work for the Department. Eachindividual participating in Departmental activities will share the responsibility of working in a safe and conscientious manner and shall follow the established policies at all times.

  3. Departmental Requirements • CPR and First Aid are required for everyone (field or lab work) • Firearms are not allowed while doing Departmental work, or in University vehicles, offices, or laboratories without the authorization of the Department Chair

  4. Vehicles • Before traveling, you must fill out a travel authorization & drivers certificate form • Repeated travel to same destination can be covered by a blanket travel authorization • Local work related travel is authorized by each vehicle’s Travel Authorization Memo and signing in on logbook • Accident report forms, first aid kits

  5. Lab Safety • Personnel in labs-- must take Chemical Safety Training offered by the Office of Radiation, Chemical, and Biological Safety (ORCBS); Renewable training available • Labs should have: ORCBS Safety Manual, posted list of all potentially hazardous chemicals, and their Material Safety Datasheets • Safety practices and equipment vary among labs – see your advisor

  6. Field Safety • Don’t do fieldwork alone • Submit a travel itinerary-let others know where you are going; Do you know where you are going? Compass? GPS? • Make sure all field personnel know route to nearest hospital • Cell phones are recommended (coverage maybe poor) • Take care in weather extremes-safety always takes precedence over expediency

  7. Boating Safety • Wear a PFD • For inland waters--should read “Michigan Boating Basics - a Guide to Responsible Boating” • For boating on the Great Lakes in a vessel >18 feet, you must pass the U.S. Power Squadron Boating Examination

  8. Other Areas DISCUSS SAFETY ISSUES WITH YOUR ADVISOR • Scuba • Never alone! • Must be certified • Electrofishing • Snowmobile, Motorcycle, ORV

Program RequirementsMaster of Science • See the Graduate Student Handbook & your advisor • Guidance committee consists of your major professor, at least one additional professor from the Dept., and one outside the Dept. • Program of study must be filed by endofsecondacademicsemester (include exposure areas) • a minimum of 30 credits, at least half of which must be at the 800 or 900 level. This can include 6-10 M.S. research credits and 2 credits of FW893. Course <400-level don’t count.

Program RequirementsDoctor of Philosophy • Minimum of 24 credits of dissertation research • Three credits of FW893 (seminars) • Program of study must be filed byendofsecondsemester • Same exposure area requirements • Comprehensive examinations: written and oral exams, normally following the completion of 80% of coursework, but within 5 years. TALK TO YOUR ADVISOR ABOUT HOW TO PREPARE! • All degree requirements-completed within 8 years

  11. Program RequirementsDoctor of Philosophy • Guidance Committee-your advisor and at least three additional members, one of which may be outside the department • Final defense includes a formal seminar open to the public, and an examination by the guidance committee

Students & Doctoral students –See enrollment requirements in the FW Graduate Student Handbook -Health Benefits Covered automatically, contact Benefits Office for spouse, children - Parking-see Dept. of Public Safety - Stipend See your advisor Pay period begins on 16th, checks on 15 or Friday before

  13. Graduate Assistantships • Vacation or Leave due to illness, etc • See your advisor • if leave is needed (e.g., illness, injury, pregnancy) the stipend is maintained for at least 2 months or until the end of the appointment period or semester • Outside work for pay is discouraged • Possible Reasons for Termination • Finish degree • Substandard performance-productivity • Violations of general student regulations • Budgetary constraints

Miscellaneous Info. • Purchases and expenditures-SEE YOUR ADVISOR • Account numbers • Receipts • Computers • Stores • Open Orders • Returns • Travel advances-MUST BE APPROVED (SIGNATURE) BY YOUR ADVISOR • Mail- need green postage card with account number in room 14 • Photocopiers • Travel Grant Program
