  2. Absent for test corrections or still unhappy with your test grade? Re-take: Tuesday, March 25th at 8:00 am ***See me for a tutoring pass

  3. What is biotechnology? • Biotechnology – any technology based on a biological system or organism. • Crime solving • Medicines • Sanitation products • More efficient ways to grow foods and drinks • More!

  4. Forensic Science • Forensic science-branch of science relating to crime scenes and legal fields. • Biotechnology includes blood typing and DNA analysis.

  5. Biotechnology in Medicine • Genetic testing-used to check DNA for possible diseases. • Gene therapy- uses viruses or bacteria to enter a cell and replace defective genes.

  6. Cloning • Cloning-creation of genetically identical organisms. • New organism will have the same DNA as the original organism and will become IDENTICAL!!!

  7. Biotechnology in Medicine • Tissue culturing-growing human tissue and organs in a laboratory. • Drug development- making insulin, arthritis medications, and antibiotics.

  8. Biotechnology in Microbiology • Microbiology-study of microscopic organisms. • Study how they can be helpful- bacteria in our bodies and in the soil. • Bioremediation- using microbes to remove harmful toxins from our environment. Example: oil spills and sewage treatment • Food production-yogurt, cheese, alcohol, bread, meat and soy products.

  9. Genetically Engineered Products

  10. Biotechnology in Agriculture • Transgenic crops-organisms that have genes from different species artificially inserted. • Bt corn-an insect resistant crop of corn. • Crops can produce more, grow quicker and longer. • Animals can produce more meat, milk or wool. • Claim to be healthier. • Makes it possible to grow crops in areas that weren’t able to before.

  11. Golden Rice • Undernourished people in poorer countries may have blindness caused by a lack of vitamin A • Contains beta-carotene, which forms Vitamin A

  12. Ethical Issues in Biotechnology • Lot of debate about messing with “nature”. • Transgenic crops- don’t know what consequences might be by changing something in the environment. • Possible that can cause food allergies. • Human Genome Project- Who owns the information? What is good use and bad use of this information?

  13. Spider Silk • Elastic, light weight fiber 5 times stronger than steel • One method involves inserting the gene from a weaving spider into a fertilized goat egg. The resultant “spider-goat” produces milk that can be manufactured into strong fibers. • To make flak jackets, rope, textiles, sutures, artificial tendons, and bandages for burn victims http://www.chm.bris.ac.uk/motm/spider/goat.jpg

  14. Glowing Organisms • Genes that make jellyfish glow are inserted into other organisms • The organism glows under UV light http://www.fluorescentpets.com/prod31.jpg

  15. Biotechnology in NC • Research Triangle Park- Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill. Includes research from NCSU, Duke, and UNC. • North Carolina Research Campus- (NCRC) in Kannapolis, NC. Both research areas of nutrition, agriculture and human health.
