  1. Teacher slide Objectives: To understand the meaning of key terminology related to University. Resources required: University terminology matching sheet (x1 per group)

Activity 1: instructions • When thinking about University, there is a variety of terminology which is important to understand. • Use the worksheet to draw a line to match the University terminology with the definition. • Discuss why you think this is the correct answer and discuss any experiences you have using or hearing this terminology. • When you have finished, compare your answers with another pair and discuss any discrepancies.

  4. Activity 1: answers Freshers: an informal term used for students in their first year at university. Clearing: when students don't get the A Levels or grades required by their chosen universities, this is the system operated to give places on courses that still have space. . Dissertation: a large piece of written work on a specific subject, usually completed in the final year of study. Deferred entry: securing a place at university but starting in a year; often to take a gap year. Sandwich course: a type of degree which includes a year working in the field of study. Prospectus: a book which each university has, listing all the courses and information about the university. It is available for free. Bursary: money given to a student, which they do not need to pay back. This is usually dependent on the student’s household income. Master’s Degree (MA): a type of degree completed after a first degree. This degree looks at a specific part of a subject in more detail. Bachelor of Science (BSc): a type of degree, usually in mathematics, engineering, or natural science. Bachelor of Arts (BA): a type of degree usually in humanities and social science fields. Joint honours degree: a university course that is split between 2 subjects. Halls of residence: university accommodation blocks. These can be catered or self catered. Undergraduate degree: the first degree students complete.

  5. Activity 2: instructions • Make a spider diagram of any one word from the terminology list. Write down everything you know about the word, and do some independent research to find out everything you can! • Remember to: • Colour code the different elements of the diagram • Write down where you found the information for anything you did some extra research for • Discuss in groups to create the most comprehensive diagram
