God has a Mission • He sent His only Son Jesus to earth for it • Later God sent the Holy Spirit • Jesus is now sending us to progress the Mission • Mission is the reason for the Gospel
God’s Passion for the Mission! Why Gospel?
Jesus and His Mission! • I must be about my Father’s business – Luke 2 • It is finished – John 19:30 • Jesus gave us the Mission when he left • The Holy Spirit was sent to empower us • We are called to take the Gospel to Nations!
Passion for the Mission! • When he saw the crowds, he had compassion • Greek word used for ‘compassion’ - Splanga • Refers to one’s Intestines • It means to have your guts ripped out • His heart was beating right out of his chest!
Jesus saw the Crowds • Like abducted children without their Father • Being tormented by their abductors • Pray that someone will care enough • Reach out to God’s lost & abducted children • Pray that someone will join me in my Mission
Jesus Prayed for our Mission In the same way that you gave me a mission in the world, I gave them a mission in the world. John 17:18(MSG)
Our Call to Mission! • Jesus repeated the call five times • The call was made in five different books • Emphasizing the importance of Mission • Mission is mandatory for God’s family • We’re either a missionary or an imposter
“All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation.” “We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God”. 2 Corinthians 5: 18 & 20
Responsibility & Privilege • Great honor to be used by God • We not only get to represent Him • We also get to be His co-workers • Greatest favour we can do to anyone • A miracle cure for a terminal illness
“When I say to wicked man, ‘you will surely die’, and you do not warn him or speak out to dissuade him from his evil ways in order to save his life, that wicked man will die for his sin, and I will hold you accountable for his blood.” Ezekiel 3:18
Eternal Significance • Changes eternal destiny of people • More important than the greatest success • Everything will perish without a trace • Consequences of Mission will last forever
Gives meaning to our Life • Best use of life is to spend it on that outlasts it • Kingdom of God outlasts everything • We have our unique role in the Mission • Place we live and the experiences we had • We can make a difference for eternity • Failing to do so, we will have wasted our life
“My life is worth nothing unless I use it for doing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus – the work of telling others the Good News about God’s wonderful kindness and love’.” Acts 20:24
What does Mission ask of us? • Replace our Agenda with God’s Agenda • Be continually filled with the Holy Spirit • Be all things to all men so you can save some • Be ready to do community fishing • Get ready to sell steak to PETA activists • Start immediately! Now is the time to act
Church and Mission • God sent His Son and the Spirit for Mission • Jesus established the church to be His Body • Mission will be accomplished through it • Be sacrificially committed to the church • They’ll flourish in the courts of our God – Ps 92 • Will be fruitful at all times, even in old age!
