  4. The President’s Term Limit There was no term limit to the presidency until 1951 George Washington began a tradition of refusing to seek more than two terms. FDR broke the tradition and won a third and fourth term in 1940 and 1944. The 22nd Amendment (passed in 1951) now sets a term limit of two terms or 8 years.

  5. Pay and Benefits In 1789 the salary for the president was $25,000 per year NOW it is $400,000 $50,000 allowance per year to be spent however the president wants to spend it. Chief of State – ceremonial head of government Chief Executive – the power to execute the laws Chief Administrator – head of the executive branch Chief Diplomat – the head of America’s foreign policy and the nation’s spokesperson in world affairs Commander in Chief - head of the armed forces Chief Legislator – head of the congressional agenda, works to persuade Congress to pass or not pass legislation Chief of Party – leader of the political party that he is part of Chief Citizen – the representative of all of the United States citizens.

  7. The Vice Presidency Qualifications: Same as the qualifications for presidency. *The President cannot fire the VP. Formal Duties: Presides over the Senate – he only votes if there is a tie in the Senate. To help decide the question of presidential disability – i.e. first in the line of succession if the president dies or is incapable of performing his duties. Salary: $230,700
