  1. Citizenship Studies What is a GCE in Citizenship studies, what does it involve and what is a citizen?!

  2. The course... • A full AS Level from AQA. • Four lessons a week. • Two units of study: Identity, rights and responsibilities. Democracy, active citizenship and participation. • Two exams, one needs a portfolio of work which includes active citizenship.

  3. Why does Citizenship look good? • UCAS points • Shows you know your rights and responsibilities • Caring member of society • Politically informed • Good for personal statements • Good experience of active roles in the community • Empowered members of society • Have a lot to contribute

  7. Some examples... • In the United States you must have been a ‘natural born citizen’ to become President or vice-president. Do you think where you were born makes you more of a citizen? • Is citizenship where we live or is it determined by our actions?

  8. Active citizenship • Is taking an active role in the community. Give some examples.

  9. Citizens or subjects? • Read the hand out and highlight in two different colours: • The key arguments stating we are citizens. • The key arguments stating we are subjects. • Which do you think we are? • Does it matter?
