  4. Republican President Supported by groups such as NRA and the Moral Majority Appointed the first female to the Supreme Court : Sandra Day O’Conner Brought Optimism back to America
  5. Reaganomics Designed to get the economy up and running Plan was Cut taxes to the wealthy as well as a tax cut across the board for Americans Reduce Government regulations on businesses and corporations and give power back to the states Reduce Government spending on social programs
  6. Peace Through Strength The believe that the United States should increase its military spending during peacetime in order to send a message to the Soviet Union. The military build-up provided economic growth through the creation of jobs
  7. Iran-Contra U.S. officials secretly sold weapons to Iran and then profits were sent to support anti-communist “contra” rebels in Nicaragua.

America

Gore won popular vote; Supreme Court stopped Florida recount giving Bush the electoral college win. 2001 Terrorist Attack —Turning Point World Trade Center and Pentagon attacked by al-Qaeda; Bush launched a war on terror U.S. Patriot Act created to give Gov’t expanded power to conduct security measures following 9/11 War on Terror: Iraq— U.S. troops deployed when Hussein was thought to have weapons of mass destruction Afghanistan—U.S. troops deployed to find terrorists Social Issues- No Child Left Behind was created to- promote educational reform by testing students in English and Math

Barack Obama Economic Issues- American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 gave economic stimulus $700 billion spent by federal government to support economy Banking and credit reform Legislation to support credit card and lending practices Political Issues- Affordable Care Act— Healthcare reform designed to make health care available to Americans Appointed Sonia Sotomayor 1st Hispanic American to U.S. Supreme Court Social Issues- Appointed—Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State Influence of Oprah Winfrey — Publicly endorsed President Obama during election over Hillary Clinton
