  1. Welcome to Back-to-School Night Mrs. Murach 3rd Grade - Room 114 Ridgewood Avenue School September 5, 2019

About Mrs. Murach… • Grew up in Westfield, NJ- Currently in Warren • Undergraduate- St. Joseph’s University- Philadelphia, PA • MA Ed. +32 additional credits and TSWD certificate from The College of St. Elizabeth- Morristown, NJ in May 2009 • 1st grade at FAS • Resource Room at RAS • Special Education at MS • 3rd grade at RAS • Two children: Mia (4) and Tyler (2 ½)

  3. Character Education Focus on 6 character traits throughout the year. September: RESPECT

  4. Behavior & Discipline Policy • Establish discipline policies as a class • Rules are posted in the classroom for the entire year • Crash Coins- school-wide incentive program

  5. Homework • Homework is assigned Monday-Thursday • Approximately 30 min to complete homework - not including 20+ min of reading time each night (Rhino Reading) • HW folder and agenda- take home each night and return to school each morning. • Missed homework- Incomplete HW Note • Website (subject to change)

Language Arts • Macmillian/McGraw Hill Wonders Program • Reading- whole group/small group instruction -comprehension quiz every otherDay 5 • Writing- writing workshop • Spelling- pretest Day 1, posttest Day 6 -practice during class on spellingcity.com • Grammar- Wonders program -quiz Day 6 • RHINO READERS • Daily 5

  7. Daily 5 What is it? • A framework for structuring literacy time to help students develop lifelong habits of reading, writing, and working independently • Allows more time for teacher and students to work one-on-one and in small groups.

  8. What do we learn in 3rd Grade? Math • McGraw Hill Everyday Math Program • Math Journals (MJ) • Homework: Home Links (book stays at school) • Hands on Program • Enrichment projects for each math unit • Math facts- Rocket Math

  9. What do we learn in 3rd Grade? Science • Mystery Science Program • Investigations/Experiments for each lesson • Units of study include: -Plants -Animals -Weather -Forces • Science Enrichment with Ms. Ellersick (once monthly)

  10. What do we learn in 3rd Grade? Social Studies • McGraw Hill: Networks Social Studies -21st century learners: interactive tools -supports reading and writing skills • Focus The United States Communities and Neighbors • Units include: -The Geography of North America and the Caribbean -Celebrating Culture -Economics -Government and Civics

  11. What do we learn in 3rd Grade? Technology Chromebook Cart- shared with Ms. Coral’s class- hopefully 1:1 soon Type to Learn- teaches proper posture and finger placement for beginner keyboarding Typing.com Computer Lab Mrs. Sullo Digital Portfolio

Grading and Report Cards • Three marking periods*** • Graded in: -Reading-comprehension, fluency, vocabulary -Writing- applies writing strategies, grammar (in isolation and applied in writing), spelling (in isolation and applied in writing) -Math- computation, number facts, concepts, strategies for solving word problems -Science -Social Studies -Work Habits/Character Development

  14. “Block the Bully” • School-wide lessons focusing on identifying, preventing, and stopping bullying

  15. Guidance Issues Mrs. Bas- office in library Monthly lessons in the classroom -getting along/conflict resolution -relieving stress -handling different emotions Excellent resource for parents Guidance passes in classroom for students
