  3. 2018-2019 Math • Flexible Thinking Strategies • Place Value (composing and decomposing numbers) • Multi-Digit Addition and Subtraction with re-grouping • Properties of Addition/Subtraction • Measurement • Tables and Graphs • Financial Literacy • Multiplication and Division • Rounding • Geometry • Fractions • Multi-step problem solving everyday in everyday situations Please help your child with quick recall of facts with games and flashcards daily

  4. 2018-2019 Reading • Choosing just right books/genre variety • Making connections • Author’s Purpose • Inferring/Drawing Conclusions • Synthesizing / Evaluating • Point of View • Main Idea/Details • Summarizing • Context Clues • Plot • Characterization • Theme • Poetry Building stamina is very important in third grade. Students are expected to read nightly for 20 minutes.

  5. 2018-2019 Independent Reading • Students will be given reading goals according to their strengths, interests, and areas of growth. • Along with their nightly goal of 20 minutes of uninterrupted reading, students will be given independent reading time in the classroom to work towards their individual reading goals. • Students will be assessed on: • successful implementation of reading strategies • progress towards independent reading goals • reading response activities • special projects • Online reading blogand journal entries • Since we are striving to achieve individual reading goals, it is imperative that your child come prepared. Students should bring their “just right” (library) book home each night and bring it back to school the next day.

  6. 2018-2019 Electronic Devices In an effort to increase technology use inside and outside the classroom, students will be allowed to use electronic devices at school when academically appropriate at teacher discretion. Students will be required to sign a Technology Agreement before they are allowed to use any devices (school property or personal) at Bolin.

  7. 2018-2019 Writing Writing is a district wide concentration for our students every year. • Your child will be writing daily across the curriculum as well as specifically assigned writing genres. • Personal Narratives • Expository • Research • Persuasive Writing • Responses to Literature • Letter Writing Most grades will come from rubrics and responses to literary elements and in-class projects through- out the year.

  8. 2018-2019 SPELLING Our spelling curriculum will help children unlock the sometimes tricky “English Language Code” in the majority of our written language words. The focus of the rule will allow children to apply the rule to new words outside of the “traditional list words” and to be used and assessed in their daily work and writing projects. Therefore, a weekly spelling list will not be sent home.

  11. 2018-2019 Benchmarks and Standardized Tests • DRA, iStation, Reading, Math, and Science Benchmarks • STAAR Simulation • STAAR Test • Math (mid-May) • Reading (mid-May) The STAAR is our state assessment. The STAAR is a rigorous assessment with problem solving and multi-step applications. Our daily instruction will reflect this change while we continue to monitor and assure foundational skills to support their deeper thinking.

  12. 2018-2019 Discipline • Positive Rewards • Whole class reward • Individual student privileges • Notes sent home/Emails • Praise • Consequences • First Offense - Verbal Warning • Second Offense- Think Sheet to be signed and returned • Third Offense – Lonely Lunch/Loss of special privileges* • Fourth Offense – Office Referral • Severe Clause - Any extreme disruptive action may cause the student to be immediately removed to the Principal’s Office. *Special privileges may include but are not limited to: Power Hour, STEAM, Steam Buddies, School Assemblies, Signature Labs

  13. 2018-2019 Homework Reading • It is a district expectation that students read nightly for 20 min. We encourage oral reading at least once a week. Please encourage your child to use their time wisely. Students will complete one reading response per week online (due by Friday). Math • Study Math Facts • Play your math games • Use your flash cards • Check Bolin links for fun internet math games • Khan Academy Math Assignment (one assignment per week; due by Friday) *Homework will begin the week of August 20th

  14. 2018-2019 Communication • Go Green Folders • WEBSITE • Weekly Newsletters (on Website) and/or Email updates • Conferences-October 22nd(Sign-ups for conferences will be available early October) • Phone calls, notes • Email is the best way to contact us during school hours. URGENT Reminder: Please emaill before 2:00 if there are changes on how your child is going home. Leave a message with Mrs. Dade after 2:00 and she will get that message to us ASAP! Without written/verbal permission, transportation changes will not be made.
