  1. MGMS Databases Cool, reliable resources just a few clicks away!

  2. To find out how to use a database, click on it: • EBSCO • Gale Discovery Collection • World Book Online • Teen Health and Wellness • Science Facts on File • Gale Opposing Viewpoints • Culture Grams

  3. EBSCO: Scroll down and click this icon from the Library page:

  4. From there, click Student Research Center:

  5. The Student Research Center search screen looks like this:

  6. Notice the search window across the top, as well as the topic searches in the left navigation window:

  7. Also notice the types of sources you can search by selecting them, or exclude from your search by unselecting them.

  8. You can narrow your search further by selecting a reading level and specifying date parameters:

  9. A search for magazine articles for cerebral palsy would get started like this:

  10. Then, scroll down to select reading levels and publications dates if you want:

  11. Scroll back up and click search:

  12. Your search looks like this. Notice you have 41 articles to look at, as well as a way to narrow your search from the left navigation window:

  13. Scrolling down, you can read the article titles, what magazine they come from, the date of the article and its Lexile.

  14. When you find one you want to read, click on HTML Full Text (usually easier to read) or PDF Full Text (sometimes hard to read, but may have pictures—as it looked in the magazine)

  15. That will bring up the article for you to read, as well as the citation information. Scan the article to see if it’s what you want. You may continue your search using the back arrow.

  17. Gale Discovery Collection: Scroll down and click this icon from the Library page:

  18. Here, you’ll find a search window on the left and topic selection on the right:

  19. If you scroll down just a bit, you’ll see that there are ways to limit your results by selecting the content types and level. You can also start your search from a content area if you wish:

  20. To look for Cerebral Palsy, you could start by clicking diseases:

  21. Resulting in this page. From here, type cerebral palsy in the quick search window:

  22. Which will give you this article. Notice that the article content is written at a basic reading level, indicated by the green circle at the left of the article’s title:

  23. To read the article, select Full-text with Graphics:

  24. Here is the article. Notice the Table of Contents bookmarks—they can take you directly to the place in the article you want to read….or, scroll down to read the whole article.

  25. From the article, you can access citation information as well:

  27. World Book Online: Scroll down and click this icon from the Library page:

  28. World book offers you a search window and a variety of resources to search using the tabs at the top:

  29. Type your search in the window and click GO:

  30. Your search comes up like this. Notice that your information has been grouped by type on the left, specified on the right. The articles listed in the center come from the encyclopedia.

  31. Clicking an article takes you to it. From here, you can read the article, read sections using the bookmarks or get citation info on the left. You can also search related info on the right, or go back to your original search.

  33. Teen Health and Wellness: Scroll down and click this icon from the Library page:

  34. You can search using the search window on the left, or by using the topics on the right, or use the browse terms of subject or A-Z.

  35. Selecting Diseases, Infections, and Conditions will get you here. From here, you may scroll down for more options or use the search window.

  36. Scrolling can result in finding exactly what you want. Click it to go to the article.

  37. Now you can read the article, or read sections using the bookmarks on the left. Citation info is on the left as well.

  38. Scrolling down a bit and clicking Resources on the left…….

  39. ….will take you to a page with links related to your search.

  40. Clicking For Further Reading……

  41. ….will take you to a page with a list of books on your topic. (the F in a circle means fiction)

  42. Clicking on Glossary…..

  43. …….will give you a page of defined terms on your topic

  44. Related articles you may be interested in are also on the right.

  46. Science Facts on File: Scroll down and click this icon from the Library page:

  47. You may search using the search window, or by selecting one of the Explore Subjects on the left:

  48. Typing cerebral palsy into the search window and clicking search……

  49. ….will get you here. The titles of each article and its type are listed here. Articles may be sorted using the active tabs.
