General Education Program Changes General Education Core Course Options (15 hours) “General Education core course options shall consist of a maximum of five courses in each area . . . and must contain high-level academic and critical thinking skills and common competencies . . . . Each student must complete at least one course in each subject area . . . . All institutions shall offer and accept these courses” beginning 2014-2015. Communication Courses Mathematics Courses Humanities Courses Social Sciences Courses Natural Sciences Courses General Education Elective Courses (15 hours) Communication Courses Mathematics Courses Humanities Courses Social Sciences Courses Natural Sciences Courses The remaining General Education course requirements shall be identified by each institution and shall include 30 semester hours total. The number of courses in each area is up to each individual institution.

The Steering Committee will have two Co-Chairs, one from the SUS (not yet determined) and one from the Florida College System (Dr. Judy Bilsky).

Florida Gulf Coast University Faculty Committee Nominations Communication – Anna Haney-Withrow Instructor I, Composition and Professional Writing Mathematics – Dr. Chuck Lindsey Associate Professor of Mathematics Humanities – Anne-Marie Bouche Associate Professor of Art History Social Sciences – Rick Coughlin Associate Professor of Political Science Natural Sciences – Charles W. Gunnels Assistant Professor of Animal Behavior “The chair of the State Board of Education (FCS) and the chair of the Board of Governors (SUS), or their designees, shall jointly appoint faculty committees to identify statewide general education core course options.” Five committees will be created (one for each of the five areas of General Education), with 12 members for each committee (6 from SUS and 6 from FCS). Provosts of each campus, working with their respective Steering Committee members, have nominated faculty from each campus.

General Education Revision Process and Timeline • General Education Core Course Options (SUS and FCS) • October 2012 – Faculty Committees convene • February 2013 – Draft Courses submitted to Steering Committee • April 2013 – Final Courses submitted to Steering Committee/BOG/etc. • Fall 2013 – Courses written into State Regulation • General Education Elective Courses (Institution-Specific) • Fall 2012/Spring 2013 – Campuses work on providing feedback to State-wide Faculty Committees • Spring 2013/Fall 2013 – Campuses work on Elective Courses • Implementation of New General Education Program • Slated for Fall 2014 • New legislation to push it to Fall 2015?
