  6. “The Bet” Background Info • Russia before Revolution of 1905 • At the time the story opens, political criminals convicted of various offenses were being tried and imprisoned, thus the impetus for the banker and lawyer’s conversation

  7. “The Bet” • Mood: In your groups, pull out words from the exposition that contribute to the mood. Write them on the board. • What IS the mood of the story then? • What is the setting?

  8. Characterization • Process by which the writer reveals the personality of a character. Two Types: • Direct: tells the audience what the personality of the character is (ex: The patient boy and quiet girl were well mannered and didn’t disobey their mother.) • Indirect: shows things that reveal to the audience what the personality of the character is (ex: Julie owned a multitude of outfits and accessories, and it always took her forever to decide which combination might impress Trent.)
