The Anglo-Saxon Period. 450 B.C to 1066 A.D. Great Britain…the beginning. Britain entered historical records through the writings of Julius Caesar. Caesar failed to conquer Britain because of the Celtic people. Celtic people = Britons. Britain: a thriving culture.

  2. Great Britain…the beginning • Britain entered historical records through the writings of Julius Caesar. • Caesar failed to conquer Britain because of the Celtic people. • Celtic people = Britons.

  3. Britain: a thriving culture • Britain had a thriving culture for its day. • 1. skilled in agriculture/metal work/trade. • 2. Oral tradition of literature/learning preserved by druids.

  4. The Romans…a stubborn bunch… Roman armies conquered the Britons after 100 yrs; forced Picts to Scotland. Britain = province of Roman Empire. Romans introduced a. cities b. stone roads c. Christianity

  5. And thus the Romans ‘peace’ out • A“R ___________” Britain became dependent on _________________. • Why did the Romans abandon Britain? Why do you think they did this? • What was the result of this abandonment? (p19)

Invasions Galore • Invasions took place of 70 years. • Angles, Saxons, other Germanic tribes fled Northern homes to Southern/Eastern Shores • Arthur—Christian commander—fought a series of battles to stop invasion. • A lot of movement; change • Arthur = Wales/Cornwall • Gaels = Ireland to Scotland • Celtic culture disappeared.

  8. Seafaring Wanderers • Invaders = seafaring wanderers. • Lives were bleak, short and violent. • Believed in pagan religion. • This religion focused on • Belief in wyrd = fate. • Admiration for heroes.
