  3. Historical FactsGRIZZLEY BEAR FACTS-THE BEAR NECCESSITIES • Lewis & Clark killed 7 grizzly bears on their expedition • There was an estimated 50,000 grizzly bears at the time of the Lewis & Clark expedition • The grizzly bear has been designated “threatened” since 1975

  10. Enemy FactsGRIZZLEY BEAR FACTS-THE BEAR NECCESSITIES • The most significant natural enemy to grizzly bears is humans • 79% of grizzly bears that die prematurely do so at the hands of humans (Dr. David Mattson-U.S. Geological Survey’s Biological Resources Division).

Examples of this include efforts in Bitterroot Montana and Yellowstone National Park. These programs seek to re-introduce the grizzly bear into areas it once flourished in.
