  1. Welcome to ALGEBRA 1 SEMESTER 1 Classroom 417 2013-2014 School Year Carl Schurz High School Instructor: David Arter

  2. Grading 40% Tests/Quizzes 40% Classwork 10% Homework 10% Final Exam

  3. Required Class Supplies Paper Pencil (no pen) Scientific Calculator (preferably Texas Instruments TI-30x) *you will need these supplies everyday!

  4. 1.1 Variables in Algebra WHAT IS ALGEBRA? Algebra is about finding the unknown and putting real life problems into equations and then solving them. WHY IS ALGEBRA IMPORTANT? Algebra helps you think logically, and in complex ways. Research proves that it makes you smarter because you are able to comprehend and decipher complex problems on your own.

  5. 1.1 Variables in Algebra • PREVIEW: What’s the chapter about? • Writing and evaluating variable expressions • Checking solutions to equations and inequalities • Using verbal and algebraic models • Organizing data and representing functions

  6. 1.1 Variables in Algebra • GOAL: Evaluate variable expressions • KEY WORDS: • Variable • Value • Variable expression • Numerical expression • evaluate

  7. 1.1 Variables in Algebra Variable: In algebra, you can use letters to represent one or more numbers. When a letter is used to represent a range of numbers, it is called a variable. Value: numbers are called values of the variable.

  8. 1.1 Variables in Algebra Variable expression: a variable expression consists of constants, variables, and operations. Numerical expression: An expression that represents a particular number is called a numerical expression.

  9. 1.1 Variables in Algebra EXAMPLE 1: Describe the Variable Expression Here are some variable expressions, their meanings, and their operations. VARIABLE EXPRESSION MEANING OPERATION 8y, 8 ∙ y, (8)(y) 8 times y Multiplication 16/b, 16 ÷ b 16 divided by b Division 4 + s 4 plus s Addition 9 – x 9 – x Subtraction

  10. 1.1 Variables in Algebra CHECKPOINT State the meaning of the variable expression and name the operation. 10 + x 13 – x x/16 24x
