Students always complain “I will never use this” • As educators, how can we get past this learning obstacle? • We need to re-think the context of our instruction. • Examples: • Ratios, Proportions, Metric measurements are used globally in industry as well as in medical fields • Writing Skills for the Workplace

  4. To Make Contextualization Successful • Investigate • What do students already know? • What are their goals? • Contact vocational instructors to determine needs • Investigate community employment trends

Improving Learning through English Contextualized Instruction • Student-created lessons using contextualized materials, activity development, and instruction • Materials are free and are available from one source, the Federal Citizen Information Center: http://publications.usa.gov/ • Students are invested and interested in what they are learning • It eliminates the question “When will I ever use this?” as students see that it applies to their lives • Valuable outcomes: practice in reading, thinking, questioning, information seeking, presenting, student-led discussions

Sample Lesson Plan:Student-created lessons based on contextualized material • Group Work • read the material (Employment Options: Tips for Older Job Seekers) • think about what classmates might want or need to know about the topic • generate at least five questions from the material • presentation/class discussion about the topic • Assignment: Write an essay: Older adults from all walks of life are returning to the workforce-or joining it for the first time. Many employers value older workers’ knowledge, maturity and work ethic, but finding a job can be difficult. • Sample questions for discussion: From Employment Options (free and available in PDF) • Why is it important to take an inventory of the skills and experience you have acquired through jobs and activities in your life? • Finding job leads: Your best source of leads for jobs is your network, people you already know-your friends, neighbors, relatives, former co-workers, church members. Do you agree or disagree? Explain. • Resume Tips: What are some important resume tips to follow in writing a summary of your skills and experience? • Application Tips: True or False/Explain: Avoid negative information, such as personal, legal or financial problem. Do not volunteer unnecessary information. • Interview Tips: Discuss important job interview tips.
