  3. כלי ראשון – a definition A pot of food that was cooked directly over a fire.

  4. כלי ראשון שהוסר מעל האש • Definition: כְּלִי רִאשׁוֹן-the pot that is taken off the fire [while it is still very hot] • Why? • Because the food in the pot is still hot enough to cook other food in it. This is, therefore, a type of בִּישׁוּל. • Examples: Uncooked meat, vegetables, seasoning, liquids

  5. Principle- אין בישול אחר בישול • Examples: Cooked foods** or noodles* • Defintion: once a food has already been cooked if cannot be cooked again. • Explanation • בישול definition (change)

  6. What do you think? Can you put some cold water into hot soup that is in a כְּלִי רִאשׁוֹן, to cool it down? • T- Yes • F- No

  7. עירוי כלי ראשון • Definition: Pouring from a כְּלִי רִאשׁוֹן into a כְּלִי שֵׁנִי. • Is this allowed? • No pouringhot soup onto baked foods • יש בישול אחר אפיה. • No pouring hot water into a cup containing a small amount of cold water • hot water will heat up the cold water.

  8. כלי שני • A container that is “second” to the original one. • Examples: soup bowl, tea cup • Practical differences b/w a כלי ראשון - כלי שני • A liquid that has been cooled can be placed in a כלי שני.* • Can pour some cold water into a cup of hot tea or into a bowl of soup to cool it off a bit.

What about tea ? • Rav Moshe Feinstein: • If water is poured into a כְּלִי שְׁלִישִׁי you can then put the tea bag into it. • ערוך השלחן: • The tea leaves will get cooked even in a כְּלִי שְׁלִישִׁי and therefore you can’t put tea leaves into hot water. • Recommendation: • Prepare tea essence - Allowed to pour the tea essence into a כְּלִי שֵׁנִי that has hot water in it.
