  4. Outreach workers are based in host organisationsDublin, Limerick, Wexford and Cork. • Provision of information, referral and support • Supporting establishment of new networks • Liaise with relevant agencies and service providers to improve quality of service for Asylum Seekers

Sonas DP Ireland Ltd • 1240 clients to end of December 2003 • Main information sought is the understanding of the asylum process • Work of the ORWs vary from area to area • Legislative changes in 2003 increased the workload o the ORWs • Innovative database analyses information gathered by the ORWs on the background of those availing of the service

  6. PROJECT AIM ‘ To improve the quality of life for particular and identifiable groups of asylum seekers at identifiable phases of the asylum determination process and in so doing to contribute to the development of best humanitarian practice’

  7. METHODOLOGY Providing information and support services to Asylum Seekers through outreach methods.

  8. MAINSTREAMING • To recommend changes to existing policies affecting asylum seekers and pro-actively develop new policies to address the changes needed • Through work in Ireland and the work of the transnational partners SONAS DP Ireland will influence policy changes at national and EU level

MAINSTREAMING • It is hoped that the adoption of the outreach worker approach and the policy of face-to-face contact will be taken up by both statutory and non statutory agencies • Development of a FAS accredited training programme for workers dealing with asylum seekers • “Self evaluation” of project will be conducted by Institute of Social Auditing in Ireland (ISAI).

  10. Overall SONAS seeks to create changes in policy, practice and attitude to assist society at national and EU level to develop a more humanitarian approach to living and working with asylum seekers.

Equal Thematic Group 5: (ETG) John Kearns (Sonas DP member) represents the Irish asylum seeker strand on the Liason and Working Groups for this EQUAL Thematic Group 39 DPs involved in 15 different TCA’s 3 priority areas for the work of the ETG are: Education, training and advice; employment; capacity building

  13. ETG5 will host a conference in Dublin on April 1 2004 focusing on asylum systems in the EU and show casing the good practices from EQUAL This event will give the opportunity for the accession countries to be introduced to EQUAL and the asylum seeker strand
