The King’s Fund is a charity that • works primarily to improve the health of Londoners by making change happen in health and social care • gives grants to individuals and organisations • carries out research and development work to bring about better health policies and services • develops people and encourages new ideas www.kingsfund.org.uk

  4. What I’m not going to cover • Creating a control (see my presentation from last year on the EUUG web site for some general principles) • In-depth coverage of the changes (e.g. setting up properties) • Linking serials control to acquisitions (Paul!) • Reports (also Paul)

Major serials changes since v.98- 1 • Wizards (joining reports and circulation from v.98 and including cataloguing andsome configuration in v.99) • Checkins no longer exist and have been replaced by Predictions • You can now search using Control or SISAC IDs(and others) • Routings are now only accessible via the serial control record

  6. Major serials changes since v.98- 2 • More flexibility with numeration patterns and name types - you can create your own. Be careful with character length as this can affect the OPAC display • Ability to merge journal issues when booking in - if all are unclaimed. If you have claimed any issue/s, you need to “unclaim” before you can merge them • Ability to book-in supplements so that they file correctly in the sequence of received issues

  7. Wizard properties • It’s important to set up properties correctly in the first place • If you’re unsure, play with it and see what happens! Be careful though... • Remember to save properties to the server when you’re sure it’s right • Settings can be saved locally, site and system-wide (only those with system admin access can save to site and system-wide) • Ask Sirsi for help and advice

  11. Saving your settings 2 • You will see this when you exit Unicorn: • Yes = saves changes locally • Yes, on server = saves site/system changes • No = exits without saving changes

  16. Helper icons 1 This enables you to select a tab from a text list • In all the tabs, you will see these helper icons: This enables you to look at the bibliographic information and volume list

Helper icons 2 This enables you to modify the base record - you can set up the template in the Modify controlwizard properties • In all the tabs, you will see these helper icons: This enables you to generate new predictions (as the old part of EDITCONTROL that allowed you to create new checkins)

Changes in Chronology types • BIMONTH (old) = JAN/FEB, MAR/APR, etc. • BIMONTH2 (new) = DEC/JAN, FEB/MAR, etc. SEASON (old) =WIN, SPR, SUM, FALL SEASON2 (new) = SPR, SUM, FALL, WIN SEASON3 (new) = JAN/MAR, APR/JUN, etc. Paul assures me that these are listed at the back of the training guide… (I can’t find them!)

Serial control Distribution tab 2 • This tab enables you to allocate the issue/s of journals within your library • This may be a single or multiple copies • You can add fewer copies than you receive if you don’t want them to display in the OPAC • If the number of copies changes, you MUST edit this tab to distribute all the copies otherwise your routing slips won’t print out for the additional copies

  30. Generating predictions 1 • As before you can generate as many predictions as you want - don’t do too many though! We usually do for a year or half year. This example shows an enumeration pattern only.

Serial control Received tab • When you set up the control properties, make sure you set the Number of issues per browsescreento a fairly large number, e.g. around 30 • If you have this set to a low number and you have received a lot of issues, you will click on the mouse FOREVER to get to the most recently received issues because...

Serial control Received tab The issues display in either chronological order or the order in which they were received (you can set this using the display options button) In other words, although it would be more useful, they don’t display in reverse order so you get the most recent issues received up first. Also… and this is really irritating...

Serial control Received tab If you go to another tab to check something (e.g. a claim) and then you want to go back to recent issue in the Received tab, you will find that it goes back to the beginning of the sequence, so you have to start clicking all over again. Something for the Sirsi wish list and the Web Forum, I think!
