  1. Adding Integers Section 1.4

  2. Objectives • Add positive and negative integers on a number line. (Gr. 6 NS 1.2) • Add integers. (NS 1.2) • Simplify expression by applying properties of rational numbers and justify the process used. (AF 1.3)

  3. Number Lines • You can use a number line to add integers. • There are two kinds – vertical numbers line and horizontal number lines. • Let’s take a closer look….

  4. Horizontal number lines Negative = Left (red) Positive = Right (blue) • -5 + 2 = +2 -5 Origin (Start)

  5. Adding Integers • What happens when you add these integers? • 3 + 4 = 4. -5 + -2= 2. -1 + -7= 5. 7 + 2= 3. 6 + 8 = 6. -8 + -4=

  6. Rule #1 Same sign Sum of numbers

  7. What happens when you add these integers? • 5 + (-2) = 4. -5 + 2= • 2. -11 + 7= 5. 11 + (-4)= • 3. -2 + 9 = 6. 8 + (-4)= Adding Integers

  8. Rule #2 differentsignsdifferenceof numbers(The larger number carries the sign.)

  9. What happens when you add these integers? • 3 + 0 = 4. 0 + (-2)= • 2. -1 + 0= 5. 0 + 2= • 3. 6 + 0 = 6. 0 + (-4)= Adding Integers

  10. Rule #3 Zero added to any number equals the original number.

  11. What happens when you add these integers? • 3 + (-3)= 4. 2 + (-2)= • 2. -1 + 1= 5. 11 + (-11)= • 3. 6 + (-6) = 6. 4 + (-4)= Adding Integers

  12. Adding opposites together will equal zero. Rule #4

  13. Meka opened a new bank account. Find her account balance after the first four transactions listed below. Application Deposits: $200, $20 Withdrawals: $166, $38 200 + 20 + (–166) + (–38) Meka’s account balance after the first four transactions is ________.

  14. Michael opened a new bank account. Find his account balance after the first four transactions listed below. Application Deposits: $175, $95 Withdrawals: $133, $65 175 + 95 + (–133) + (–65) Michael’s account balance after the first four transactions is ____________.

  15. Lesson Quiz Add. 1. –7 + (–7) 2. 15 + (–9) + (–2) –14 4 Evaluate each expression for the given value of the variable. 3. 13 + r for r = –15 4. 2 + b + (–9) for b = –6 –2 –13 5. On Monday, a local dog shelter had six dogs. By Friday, they had found homes for three, but took in two more. Then how many dogs were in the shelter? 5 dogs
