Purpose of Interrogation • To obtain information concerning the innocense or guilt of the suspect • To obtain a confession to the crime from a guilty suspect • To induce the suspect to make admissions • To know the surrounding circumstances of a crime • To learn of the existence and location of physical evidence such as documents or weapons

  4. To learn the identity of accomplices • To develop information which will lead to the fruits of the crime • To develop additional leads for the investigation • To discover the details of any other crime in which the suspect participated

  5. Interrogation Techniques • Emotional appeal • Sympathetic approach • Kindness • Extenuation • Shifting the blame • Mutt and Jeff

  6. Type of Offenders • Emotional Offenders • Have greater sense of morality • Feel remorse for their action • Use the sympathetic approach • Non-emotional Offenders • Do not feel guilt • Use factual analysis approach • Let him know his guilt has already been or will soon be established
