Why Bother? • Have you ever wondered… • How technological innovation affects competition? • What it takes to commercialize your invention and make it into a successful product in the marketplace? • How to protect your ideas and intellectual property? • How to develop an innovative organization • organizational structures, motivation, recruitment, rewards • What issues you will have to deal with if you work in a high-technology company (or a startup)? Here’s a chance to go beyond the hype.

About this course • What it’s about: • Purpose: to help students develop a strong conceptual foundation for understanding how to manage technological innovation. • This course is broad in focus and an excellent introduction to more specialized innovation courses. • What its NOT about: • Its not about ‘technology’ per se, but the managerial and competitive aspects of technology. • This is not an Information Technology course. • This is not a “guru” course with all the ‘right’ answers!

Course structure • Highly interactive classes… (40%) • Class participation • In-class group exercises • Videos, case studies • Students take turns to lead each week (10% of the 40%) • Learning in small teams… • Group project on high-tech innovation (20%) • Moments of reflection… • Two Minipapers (20%) • No final exam • Instead you write a 8-10 page final paper (20%)

Expectations • Active Participation! • Preparation time is around 2 hrs/week. • Each week there are readings and cases. • Reading is not enough – you have to think and analyze them. • Do not come unprepared or you will be embarrassed and learn very little. • Details about minipapers, group projects and final exams will be given in class.
