  1. Project Title: “GIS and JOURNALISM” serious tools for serious storytellingPresented by Ossai Chuks. AExecutive Director Poverty Alleviation Network & Self Dependence Initiative Presented at the News Innovation Event London on the 13th of September, 2013 through the Google ᵻ Hangout

  2. Introduction • The project built the capacity of selected Nigeria Journalists from across the Country in using MapWindow 4 Desktop GIS software and Google Fusion Tables to manage, analyze, map and report Stories/Reports. • Also a Policy Dialogue Conference was held to further build their capacity in using data and ICT for their work and to network them been the new hub of digital Journalism in Nigeria. The conference produced a communiqué which is expected to facilitate Computer-Assisted Journalism in Nigeria.

  3. Activities • Advocacy Visits and Media Outreach • 6 Training Workshops in the six (6) Geo-Political Zones of the Country • Policy-Dialogue Conference for selected Journalist

  4. Successes & Output • Network of GIS & Google Fusion Application Compliant Journalist from across the Country. • Boost data-driven Journalism in Nigeria • Built capacities for Computer-Assisted Journalism • Supported infrastructure for Computer-Assisted Journalism • Newsletter used as an advocacy tool to other Journalist and Stake-holders for them to be aware of the need for them to know and use GIS and Google Fusion Table, WORD, CAD for their Reportage.

  5. Sustainability • Refresher Training • More Training • Infrastructure and Equipment for them and their media houses • Building of a Network of the Journalist trained that will be constantly monitored by us.
