  1. Created for Good WorksEphesians 2:10 Ephesians  the “blueprint for the church”  truths about the nature andthe responsibility of the church Who is the church of Jesus Christ? Sometimes we personifying the church to divert that responsibility to take action to some organizational “entity”

  2. The “Church” is responsible to evangelize our community for Christ The “Church” is responsible to help the poor and needy in our community The “Church” is responsible to teach my children about God. BUT  the church is YOU and ME. 1 Corinthians 12:27 [ESV] - Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.

  3. Ephesians 1: Theme: the wonderful possessions we have in Christ. Ephesians 2: Theme: the incredible position we have in Christ. v. 1-3: The Incredible Depth from which we came v. 4-7: The Incredible Height to which God raised us v. 8,9: The Incredible Grace that saved us

  4. Ephesians 2; 8,9 [ESV] - For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. v. 10: The Incredible Work we are called to do Break Down of Ephesians 2:10: God Created Us For Good Works God Prepared Good Works For Us To Do God Calls Us To Walk In Good Works

  5. 1. God Created Us For Good Works Ephesians 2:10a [ESV] – “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works…” Our identity in Christ  points back to God v.10 - “We are his workmanship” “workmanship” – Greek it is poiema – we get the word poem We are God’s work of art – His MASTERPIECE!

  6. Psalm 8: 1-6 [ESV] - O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens…When I look at your heavens …what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him? Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor.” God’s masterpieces have been tainted. Believers have been created and re-created in Christ Jesus.

  7. The ultimate workmanship of God is a human being who, despite being dead in transgression and sins, has been made alive in Christ. We say this because he is the subject of two creations by Christ. Kent Hughes Colossians 1:15-16 [ESV] - He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.

  8. Christ is also the one who is involved in your re-creation: 2 Corinthians 5:17 [ESV] - Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. This is our Rebirth: 1 Peter 1:3 [ESV] - Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

  9. But being that new creation carries with it responsibility. Ephesians 2:10a [ESV] – “created in Christ Jesus for good works which God prepared beforehand [for us]…” 2. God Prepared Good Works For Us To Do Works have nothing to do with our salvation Ephesians 2:8,9 [NLT] - God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. Salvation is a free gift of God’s grace

  10. Ephesians 2:10a [ESV] – “…created in Christ Jesus for good works” Is Paul contradicting himself? Understand the sequence of events: Salvation is by grace alone through faith alone. Salvation is not about information  It is about transformation Many religions teach  you must do good works for your salvation. Grace based Christianity says  I will do good works because of my salvation.

  11. John Stott: Good works are indispensible to salvation – not as its grounds or means…but as a consequence and evidence. Good works should point people to God’s incredible workmanship in you; His saving power that took you from death to life. Matthew 5:16 [ESV] - Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

  12. God has prepared good works for us to do God is sovereign and has a plan for your life. Philippians 2:13 [ESV] - For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him. God works in you through His Word 2 Timothy 3:16,17 [ESV] - All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.

  13. God works in you through the power of His Spirit Ephesians 3:20 [ESV] - Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us. 2 Peter 1:3 [NIV] - His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness…

  14. 2 Peter 1:5-7 [NIV] - For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. As a follower of Christ, God has a purpose for your new life in Christ. It includes some work – good work - that He has prepare for you to do.

  15. 3. God Calls Us To Walk In Good Works Ephesians 2:10 [ESV]: God’s Part: For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand… Our Part: …that we should walk in them. Contrast between 2:1 and 2:10 Without Christ: “dead in our trespass and sin in which we once walked” With Christ: “we should walk in [good works].”

  16. Our walk = our behavior – our actions – our way of life. Galatians 5:16 – But I say, walk by the Spirit, not according to the flesh Ephesians 5:2 – walkin love Colossians 1:10 – walk in a manner worthy of the Lord. Ephesians 2:10 - walkin good works! Are you walking in good works?

  17. What good works look like: Romans 12: 9-12 [NLT] - Don’t just pretend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good. Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other. Never be lazy, but work hard and serve the Lord enthusiastically. Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying. When God’s people are in need, be ready to help them. Always be eager to practice hospitality.

  18. God empowers us by His Spirit to do good works. 2 Corinthians 9:8 [ESV] - And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work. Are you walking in the good works God has prepared for you to do? Or are you still walking around in your “transgressions and sins” letting your old nature control your behavior?

  19. God’s saving power should be demonstrated in us through a changed lifestyle! Imagine a church in which people knew they were bound to Jesus Christ, lived in union with him, reflected his death and resurrection, and, conscious of their new creation by God, lived productive lives. That is what Paul is describing, and that is what we are called to be. Klyne Snodgrass

  20. Our devotion to Christ should be demonstrated by a life of service to Him. Our greatest response of gratitude for the gift of salvation we have received. 2012 Theme: UNITED together in PASSIONATE SERVICE to God. We can share opportunities to fulfill what God has called us to do… …To walk together in good works that He has prepared for us.
