  3. 1.100 What is a crystal lattice? The pattern formed by all of the crystals in a solid.

  4. 2.100 What are metals? These elements conduct heat and electricity and are on the left side of the Periodic Table.

  5. 3.100 What are reactants? The substances in a chemical reaction that exist before the reaction takes place.

  6. 4.100 What is synthesis? A reaction in which two simple substances combine to form a new more complex substance.

  7. 1.200 What is an polyatomic ion? A group of two or more atoms sharing a charge and acting as one unit.

  8. 2.200 What are non-metals? These elements are insulators and are on the right side of the Periodic Table.

  9. 3.200 What are products? The substances in a chemical reaction that exist after the reaction has finished.

  10. 4.200 What is decomposition? A reaction in which a complex substance is broken into two or more simpler substances.

  11. 1.300 What is an ionic compound? A compound in which the bonds are formed due to the transfer of electrons.

  12. 2.300 What are ions? Atoms with a charge.

  13. 3.300 What is a catalyst? A substance that increases the speed of a chemical reaction but is not changed by the reaction.

  14. 4.300 What is single replacement? A reaction in which an element moves into a compound and substitutes for one of the elements in the compound.

  15. 1.400 What is a covalent compound? A compound in which the bonds are formed by the sharing of electrons.

  16. 2.400 What are metalloids? Elements that have some properties of metals and some of non-metals.

  17. 3.400 What is a coefficient? The number in front of a formula that indicates the quantity of that substance.

  18. 4.400 What is double replacement? A chemical reaction where the cation of one compound exchanges with the cation of another substance.

  19. 1.500 What is a cation? Ions with a positive charge.

  20. 2.500 What is the oxidation number? This number represents the charge of the ion.

  21. 3.500 What is balancing an equation? Using coefficients to make sure the number of each type of atom in the reactants is equal to the number in the product .

  22. 4.500 What is a precipitate? A solid that comes out of solution when two substances are combined.
