Pedro Morales is 20 years and has decided to migrate to California in search of a well paid job. Your decisions will be: What to take with you How you will enter the USA What job you will take

  12. First decision..... • How will you cross from Mexico to California? Option A Swim across the Rio Grande • 1:10 chance of getting caught. Option B Cut the wires on the fence and crawl under. • 1:3 chance of getting caught. If you are caught by the immigration officials you can bribe them with $20 and they will let you through.

  13. What job will you take: Option A: Cattle Hand • $5 a day. • Work is hard and long. • Need a work permit ($20) – can buy after started working. • Summers are hot, dry and dusty, 28 degrees and no rain in the summer. Option C: Factory worker • Ford factory close to border with Mexico. • $20 a day. • Working conditions are good. • Work inside outside of sun. • Need a work permit. • Option B: Fruit and Cotton Farm • Picking fruit and cotton. • Hard work and long days. • $2.50 a day. • No work permit needed. • Summer very hot (30 degrees), rain in summer months. • Option D: Bar Work • Working on tables and behind the bar. • Work is tiring and long hours. • $2 a day but get tips. • No work permit needed.

  14. What will you pack for your trip? You have $40. This must provide for what you will take with you and your first day and night in the USA. You can take as many items as you wish but remember they must be practical and you must give a reason for why you are taking them. E.g. Matches to light a fire as he needs to keep warm because he might have to survive outside in a desert where it gets cold at night and he would need a fire to cook on if he were outside.

  15. What will you take with you?

  16. What else would you need to take?

  17. Plenary Feedback to other groups and ensure all information is taken down in order to complete homework.
