  2. How Does it Happen? • No accountability, abused as a child, other details we are not privy to. • “If even Haggard, this Christian fighter against homosexuality, succumbed, doesn’t that prove that gay identity is natural, inborn and therefore natural?” • Total Depravity: not as bad as we could be…but sin has impacted every area of your life. • If sin were blue….you and I would be blue all over. Romans 3:10

  3. What do we do? Some Considerations: • Historically church discipline regarded as one of the marks of the true church. • Biblical church discipline faces sin head on, upholds the name of Jesus and seeks to win back the erring believer. • Three purposes: Preserve the Purity of the Church, Protect the Honor of Jesus, Restore the Erring brother.

  4. What Does Jesus Say to Do? • Matthew 18: 15-17 – 4 step process. • Step 1 – Go to the person • Step 2 – Go with someone else • Step 3 – Tell it to the church • When it involves a major leader (I Timothy 5:19-20) • When the sin is known throughout the congregation (I Cor. 5:1-2) • When drastic action is required to protect the church and the honor of Jesus (Rom. 16:17-20) • Step 4 – Treat him as an unbeliever

  5. Questions and Answers? • What sins especially call for church discipline? • Blatant immorality (I Cor. 5) • Serious false doctrine (Rom. 16:17-20) • Divisive Behavior (Titus 3:10) • When should we overlook the sins of others?

  6. Questions and Answers (cont.) • When is it right to confront another believer? • Confront sin when it cannot be overlooked. • Deliberate, repeated, malicious, injurious • Health of church is at stake and honor of Jesus • When should we completely forgive and restore? • Genuine evidence of godly sorrow and deep repentance • What is the greatest danger we face? • Becoming to harsh or being to easy

  7. 4 Steps in Restoration • “Brothers, if someone is caught in a sin, you who are spiritual should restore him gently. But watch yourself, or you also may be tempted.”Gal. 6:1 • First, they are trapped – “caught” in sin, so what will you do? • Second, requires spiritual people to act. • Third, it must be done gently – meekly • Fourth, you must be careful lets you fall

  8. Summary • It is time to become what God meant us to be – holy, without spot or blemish, blameless before the world
