  2. MONARCHIES An inherited position w/Divine Right. Prior to 1900, most nations monarchies. Problems? Saudi Arabia, Kuwait Constitutional Monarchy The king/queen has no political authority. Great Britain, Japan, Norway. Why should citizens pay for figure head monarchs?

  3. REPUBLICS • Most nations today. • Representatives elected by Citizens run the govt. EX: USA, France, India, Mexico Democracy is when people vote on govt decisions. America is a democratic-republic

  4. Dictatorships • Republics often controlled by one man or group. They are dictatorships. AUTOCRACY: Single person holds power Libya OLIGARCHY: Group holds power “rule by a few” Nazi Germany Both are AUTHORITARIAN-not responsible to anyone TOTALITARIAN- Control all aspects of citizen life. Myanmar, China?

  5. Power levels of a Government • Unitary: 1 central govt has all the power. No local govt. Britain, Israel, Japan…what do they have in common? Federal: Power divided between national, state & local govt. Power can be shared or given to one or another. USA, Australia, Germany Confederal: Independent states join together to carry out some policies. EU, Russia, USA 1781-1789

  6. Power Inside a Government • Power is given to different branches in a govt. PRESIDENTIAL SYSTEM: A Legislative branch makes laws & an executive (president) carries out the law. The president is chosen by voters separate from law makers. USA PARLIAMENTARY: The executive (prime minister) is chosen by law makers. Legislative branch can vote out executive. Britain, Israel.
