  1. Recent developments in the CMSAF R. Hollmann DWD

  2. Overview of Surface Radiation products Results of validation Applications of products ‘new’ products Final remarks Content of Talk

  3. Covered area: 30° N to 80° N, 60° W to 60° E 15 x 15 km² sinusoidal projection NOAA-AVHRR based products operational available since Jan 2005 Daily and monthly means MSG based products operational available for public since Sep 2005 Daily and monthly means. Monthly mean diurnal cycle. Products: Space-time resolution Access to our products: http://www.cmsaf.dwd.de

  4. Example MSG products Monthly mean 2005,07: top SOL, SDL; bottom SIS, SAL

  5. Example MSG products Monthly mean 2005,07: left SNL; right SNS

  6. Example operational validationSIS, daily mean since 03/2004

  7. Example operational validationSDL, daily mean since 03/2004

  8. Investigation of SOL/SDL cold bias Payerne Map of the region around Payerne. The width of the map is 25 miles. The red star is Payerne location.

  9. Example operational validationSIS, bias Lindenberg

  10. CM-SAF: Surface Radiation Surface Solar radiation, monthly mean, July 2005 AVHRR SEVIRI

  11. CM-SAF: Cloud Clouds fractional cover: monthly mean / July 2005 AVHRR SEVIRI

  12. 10 W/m² „target accuracy“ für monthly means (SIS,SOL,SDL) are in general achieved. Problems in the Alpine region, especially for the longwave radiation. Support by MeteoSwiss. Validation will proceed user are informed about validation results on the web-page. Conclusion Validation

  13. Sub-pixel variability From B. Dürr, MeteoSwiss

  14. Example Product Applications- solar energy - Monthly sums of global radiation (kWh/m²) – March 2005 - • Satellite-Surface-Data product • Satellite based global irradiance compared with 20 ground based stations in Germany: • Mean absolute bias below 1 KWh (<1%) • using only 3 ground stations => 3.5 kWh (4 %)

  15. SID – important for planning of solar power plants SID – has been implemented by C. Matsoukas (FORTH, Crete) within a visiting scientist study SID – first validation shows encouraging results (<15 W/m², monthly mean) Add-on PRODUCTS- SID direct irradiance -

  16. Add-on PRODUCTS- direct irradiance - Example: NOAA overpass 03.03.2004, 13:12 UTC W/m² SIS Direct Irradiance

  17. Final remarks Our current products are in general within the desired target accuracy < 10 W/m² We have demonstrated key applications for user Development of new products support of RADAGAST support of GEWEX-RFA Access to our products: http://www.cmsaf.dwd.de
