  1. GCSE Functional Question Booklet Edexcel Specification B Mathematics Unit 2 This booklet has been produced to help with the functional questions in your exam. These are often labelled with an asterix * and require you to use written English to explain the solution you have arrived at. They are worth anything from 4 up to 6 marks and require you to show all of your working out. At all times, you must make clear what it is that you are working out. E.g. it is not enough to just scatter calculations around the page and hope that the examiner can work out what you are doing. If you are working out train ticket prices then write “train ticket prices” next to the correct calculation. Contents Section 1 – includes hints and tips to help the students set out their work and gain marks. Add adult and child cost ii) Subtract your answer from part i) from £20 Hint: count up until you reach £20 if subtraction is not your strong point

(cost=number of packs needed x cost per pack) 5. Work out the cost of buying the folders from Stationary Sales – (work out how many you would get for free) (cost = number actually paid for x cost per folder) 6. Make sure ALL working out is shown. 7. Show your findings in written English (i.e. write a sentence to say who is cheaper)

Section 1 Your Solution Theme Park Tickets Train Tickets • Hints and Tips • Underline/highlight important information • Set out your work so that you can clearly see what is being worked out. • Work out the cost of booking the required number of theme park tickets (price per ticket multiplied by number of people attending) • Apply the discount by finding 20% of total then subtract from total. (find 10% first) • Work out how many group train tickets you need. • Calculate how much you spend on group train tickets. • Remember to use the grid method when multiplying. • Add the theme park and train prices together. • Subtract from amount Sam has to spend. • Write a sentence to say whether Sam can afford to go.

Use total amount to calculate amounts of other expenses (rent = 205 of total (worked out in part 2)) (salary = ¼ of total (worked out in part 2)) 4. Add up amount spent on each item 5. Subtract total spent from total salary (worked out in part 2)

Work out the area to cover with gravel (area of garden – area of pond) • 5. Work out the amount of gravel needed (area needed multiplied by amount of gravel need to cover 1m2)

Remember to write a sentence to explain your findings.
