What is smart classroom? • They are electronically enhanced lecture theatres and classrooms. • It helps to create new opportunities in teaching and learning by integrating computer, multimedia and network technology. • Northwestern University defines smart classrooms as “technology enhanced classrooms that foster opportunities for teaching and learning by integrating learning technology, such as computers, specialized software, audience response technology, assistive listening devices, networking, and audio/visual capabilities”.

Smart classrooms in India • Smart class was launched by EDUCOM in 2004 • At the very initial stage of launch many Indian reputed schools like Takshila, and Cambridge- Chain of schools were the first to adopt the programme. • It has been now adopted by more than 1000 schools across India and helps in a rapid transformation of moving technology into classrooms in India.

  8. Advantages • Allows communication between different schools in different locations. • Increased exposure and wider access to information • Enhanced teaching learning experiences. • Improved student participation • Offers flexibility • Improved thoughtful skills • Provide rapid assessment

  9. Disadvantages • Costly to integrate into schooling • Maintenance of equipment and devices are costly. • Lack of infrastructure on all the schools. • Lack of trained teachers • Lack of face to face interaction • A disconnected youth due to screen addiction.

Conclusions • Smart Classroom combines smart pedagogy, collaborative teaching and the latest technological teaching tools to create a modern and effective education service environment • Implementation of smart classrooms increased a lot from primary level to higher secondary levels which causes a revolution in educational system
