IS BARIATRIC SURGERY REALLY HELPFUL FOR WEIGHT LOSS?

With a growing proportion of the world’s adult population tipping the weight scale into obesity especially in more developed countries, obesity is gradually gaining momentum as a condition of global concern. 1. IS BARIATRIC SURGERY REALLY HELPFUL FOR WEIGHT LOSS?

  2. With a growing proportion of the world’s adult population tipping the weight scale into obesity especially in more developed countries, obesity is gradually gaining momentum as a condition of global concern. More so is the association of obesity with a host of other metabolic anomalies collectively referred to as metabolic syndrome including Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, hypertension, hyperlipidemia etc

  3. In a bid to stem the tide and reverse the trend, approaches have included mass education, dietary changes, adoption of a strict exercise regimen and avoidance of sedentary lifestyles and in extreme case the use of drugs to achieve weight loss. This traditional approach has met with varying success as ever the most disciplined of individuals find it difficult to lose weight and maintain their new weight without it rebounding to previous levels.

  4. Many types of Bariatric surgery options exist. They include • Adjustable gastric banding • Gastric sleeve surgery • Gastric bypass surgery • Ileal interposition • Transit Bipartition • Biliopancreatic diversion & Duodenal switch

  5. Gastric sleeve surgery or sleeve gastrectomy: this involves the excision of about 80% of the stomach. It is an irreversible surgical option. The small size of the stomach left leads to early satiety with smaller portions of food, decreased hunger, rapid weight loss with minimal long term side effects. It is one of the most effective Bariatric surgery methods. It has also been shown to control blood sugar in type 2 diabetics via increased insulin sensitivity. However, the effects are not very long lasting. Five year data indicate 50% re-occurrence of initially treated conditions.

  6. Transit Bipartition: This is a surgical procedure involving removal of some part of the stomach and creating two channels which link stomach. In this way the food is divided in to two without a single exclusion. Its effects are merely based on the intestinal hormonal changes, rather than absorption associated mechanisms. It’s effective in limiting fat absorption which results in weight loss, and control of associated conditions. It does not require long term multivitamin and mineral support.
