  1. Mathematics for Medical Calculations Mathematics Learning Skills 1800 275 278

  2. Skills to know • Times tables See them, write them, say them often Recognise the patterns multiples of evens are always even multiples of odds are odd, even, odd, even etc

  3. Times tables grid 2: 2,4,6,8,10,12,14,16,18 3: 3,6,9,12,15,18,21,24,27 4: 4,8,12,16,20,24,28,32,36 5: 5,10,15,20,25,30,35,40,45 6: 6,12,18,24,30,36,42,48,54 7: 7,14,21,28,35,42,49,56,63 8: 8,16,24,32,40,48,56,64,72 9: 9,18,27,36,45,54,63,72,81 11: 11,22,33,44,55,66,77,88,99 12: 12,24,36,48,60,72,84,96,108 15: 15,30,45,60,75,90,105,120,135

  4. Clever zeros • Zeros can be place fillers: You can write any number of zeros in front of whole numbers 15 = 015 = 0015 they all just represent 15 You can add any number of zeros after the last decimal place 2.3 = 2.30 = 2.300 = 2.3000 they all just represent 2.3 Any whole number can be written as a decimal 15 =15.0 , 8 = 8.0 , 253 = 253.0

  5. Thank goodness for base 10 • Place value matters Line up numbers in place values especially when dividing. The only exception is multiplying decimals when place value is considered after the multiplication takes place

  6. Thank goodness for base 10 • Know how to times and divide by powers of 10, especially 1000 to multiply by 1000 slide the decimal point to the right three places 3.2 x 1000 write 3.2 as 3.200 to make the places 3.200 x 1000 = 3 200. = 3200

  7. Multiplying 0.56 x 1000 0.560 x 1000 = 0 560. = 560 0.03 x 1000 0.030 x 1000 = 0 030. = 30

  8. Dividing To divide by 1000 slide the decimal point to the left three places 2600 ÷ 1000 = 2600. = 2.6 267 ÷ 1000 = 267. = .267 = 0.267 52.3 ÷ 1000 = 052.3 =.0523 = 0.0523

  9. Thank goodness for base 10 • Common Nursing weight measures: kilograms (kg), grams (g), milligrams (mg) and micrograms (mcg or μg) • Common Nursing liquid measures: litres (L), millilitres (mL) • To convert to a smaller unit times by 1000 (move decimal point 3 places to right) • To convert to a bigger unit divide by 1000 (move decimal point 3 places to left)

  10. The magic of 1 • Any whole number can become a fraction • Multiplying and dividing by 1 does not change value, but can change appearance • Fraction equivalents of 1:

  11. Long Multiplication 49x25 Don’t forget to add the 0 in the second line

  12. Multiplication ending in 0 400 x 60 = 24000 ( 4 x 6 = 24, then add 3 noughts) 30 x 50 = 1500 (3 x 5 = 15, then add 2 noughts) 3000 x 20000 = 60000000 ( 3 x 2 = 6, then add 7 noughts)

  13. Division

  14. Division

  15. Division

  16. Dividing into a decimal number Example:

  17. Multiplying decimals • 0.5 x 0.7 5 x 7 = 35 0.5 x 0.7 = 0.35 The answer must have 2 decimal places ie two numbers after the decimal point 2) 1.5 x 0.03 15 x 3 = 45 1.5 x 0.03 = .045 = 0.045 The answer must have three decimal places

  18. Simplifying fractions • Is what you do to fraction answers

  19. Multiplying Fractions Multiply tops, multiply bottoms, simplify

  20. Rounding off • 8.32|56 to two decimal places is 8.33 6.2|3 to one decimal place is 6.2 15|.9 to the nearest whole number is 16

  21. Converting fractions to decimals

  22. Metric conversions Convert 2.5L to mL To a smaller unit so x1000 2.5x1000 = 2.500 =2500 mL

  23. Convert 0.04mg to mcg To smaller unit so x1000 0.04x1000 = 0.040 = 0040 = 40mcg

  24. Convert 235mg to g To bigger unit so ÷1000 235÷1000 = 235. = .235 =0.235g
