Service Learning • Service Learning is a method of teaching, learning and reflecting throughout the community. • It involves students in community service activities and applies the experience to personal and academic development. • Service Learning provides people with the opportunity to get involved in community events and help with community projects.

Benefits of Service Learning for STUDENTS • Engages students in active learning that demonstrates the relevance and importance of academic work for their life experience and career choices. • Broadens perspectives of diversity issues and enhances critical thinking skills. • Improves interpersonal skills that are increasingly viewed as important skills in achieving success in professional and personal spheres. • Develops civic responsibility through active community involvement. • Provides substantial human resources to meet educational, human, safety, and environmental needs of local communities.

Benefits of Service Learning for COMMUNITY • Allows the energy and enthusiasm of college students to contribute to meeting needs. • Fosters an ethic of service and civic participation in students who will be tomorrow's volunteers and civic leaders. • Creates potential for additional partnerships and collaboration with the campus. • Allows interaction between the community and local students. • Provides free service to the community and the less fortunate. • Extends campus resources into the community and reinforces the value of the scholarship of engagement.

  5. What is Blazer Build? • Blazer Build is when athletes help build a home for people who are less fortunate on behalf of Valdosta State University.

  6. What I Did • At Blazer Build, a few of my team members and I were split up into groups. • I nailed the structure of the house together with boards that were placed on the outside. Basically, I put up the walls that cover the house. • I also nailed on the insulation onto every wall of the house. • The last project I helped with was nailing the roof to the side of the house.

  7. What I got out of Service Learning • By participating in the Blazer build for Habitat for Humanity I learned how to generally put a house together. • Also, it was a great experience to volunteer and do something really neat for someone else. It was great spending time with my team as well. • I learned that I like doing things for people who are in need. It also made me realize how fortunate I am. • Overall, I enjoyed my service and it is my way of giving back to the community.
