  1. November 27, 2018| 8:30 am Panel: Remote Energy Generation Speakers: Dr. Dionne Hernandez-Lugo, NASA Glenn Research Center, Panel Chair Steve Rhyne, NuGen, LLC- Panelist Allyson Callaway, NuScale Power- Panelist Vanessa Clark, Atomos Nuclear, Panelist

  2. SESSION DESCRIPTION NASA’s Kilopower project is a technological endeavor with the intent to develop an affordable fission nuclear power system that will enable long-duration stays on planetary surfaces. Can a technology like Kilopower be used on Earth

  3. Panelist Bio

  4. Kilopower Project NASA and DOE Small Modular Reactor Design

  5. Technology Overview Applications • Kilopower addresses a gap in the NASA Technology Roadmaps (TA-03) for robust, sun-independent power generation in the 1 to 10 kWe range • Future Science and Exploratory Missions require a reliable source of power for which there is no off-the-shelf solution • Kilopower Reactor Using Stirling Technology (KRUSTY) serves as a baseline for on follow-on human missions with multiple stand-alone units that provide redundancy/fault tolerance and flexibility for re-use at multiple sites with power needs of 1 to 10 kWe throughout the solar system (e.g. including subsurface Europa science, ISRU propellant production, crew life support/operations and future outer planet missions) Rovers Surface Power Communication System Power ISRU Demo Outer Planets Science

  6. Kilopower Project Small and simple approach to produce 1 to 10 kilowatts of power for long-duration, sun-independent electric power for space or extra-terrestrial surfaces • Kilopower Reactor using Stirling Technology (KRUSTy) • Close to 1 kWe fission reactor system with Highly Enriched Uranium (HEU) • Uses solid, cast, 93% enriched uranium-235 reactor core… about the size of a paper towel roll • Transfers reactor heat with passive sodium heat pipes • Converts heat to electricity with high efficiency Stirling engines • Leverages current DOE fuel production processes and abundant material supply from dismantled nuclear weapons

  7. Kilopower Reactor Using Stirling Technology (KRUSTY)

  8. KRUSTY Full Power Test • Reference: Marc A. Gibson, David I. Poston, Patrick McClure, Thomas Godfroy, James Sanzi, and Maxwell H. Briggs. "The Kilopower Reactor Using Stirling TechnologY (KRUSTY) Nuclear Ground Test Results and Lessons Learned", 2018 International Energy Conversion Engineering Conference, AIAA Propulsion and Energy Forum, (AIAA 2018-4973) • https://doi.org/10.2514/6.2018-4973 Power Transients Nuclear Transients No active cooling Start-up

  9. Kilopower/KRUSTY Accomplishments • KRUSTY provided valuable experience and data. • Successfully exercised nuclear infrastructure, expertise, regulatory framework, etc. • Data from KRUSTY will help benchmark codes to design and fission systems well beyond Kilopower. • KRUSTY demonstrated the passive reactor operation of the Kilopower reactor class. • The nuclear performance of KRUSTY is highly prototypic to any Kilopower concept between 1 and 10 kWe. • Can a technology like Kilopower be used on Earth…
