  2. Requesting hosting (and sites) Get ready with your device!

  3. Requesting Hosting Before selecting a development platform, it is important to consider how you will host your website UNM IT offers 3 main options – see Webhosting Feature Comparison If cPanel meets your needs, you can request hosting as follows: Request a department or club netid if you do not have one Request a cPanel hosting account at siterequest.unm.edu When cPanel emails you account information, login and create an Addon Domain After a few hours, your site (Addon Domain) will be available on the internet There are various reasons you may prefer to stay on our dept2 hosting platform – if so, no worries. Request hosting on dept2 via Help.UNM (takes longer than siterequest.unm.edu because the process is manual)

  4. Choosing a development platform Depending on your needs, there are a variety of ways to develop a website at UNM Use Cascade Server (WCMS) Take the online, self paced training at webmaster.unm.edu Once complete, request a Cascade website at webmaster.unm.edu (not from UNM IT – weird right?) Once the webmaster provisions your Cascade Site, use FastInfo 7497 to set it up for publishing Use WordPress, Drupal or another CMS If you opt for a CMS/web application, using cPanel + Softaculous is HIGHLY recommended Build from scratch (HTML/JavaScript/CSS) For many cases, Cascade Server is the best fit (very secure, very easy to use)

  5. WordPress and web application hardening Get ready with your device!

  6. Top 3 recommendations Always keep WordPress (or any other CMS) and its components (like themes and plugins) up to date Use CAS for administrator and user authentication (if feasible) Force your entire site to use SSL (HTTPS)

  7. How? Updates Use Softaculous in cPanel – set it and forget it Use the SFTP Updater Plugin – FastInfo 7441 CAS Authentication Use the CAS Maestro Plugin – FastInfo 7440 SSL (HTTPS) Step 1: Test with the UNM use HTTPS plugin Step 2: If all works, submit a ticket to IT to redirect your site to HTTPS

  8. Selling merchandise and collecting donations on your site Get ready with your device!

  9. Selling Merchandise Use TouchNetMarketPlace Already implemented and approved – get up and running very quickly Funds collected are deposited into UNM accounts (for your department) Free to setup and use, BUT credit card processing costs 2.5% - 3.5% of each transaction (budget 4% to be safe) Example: UNM IT’s MarketPlace Contact Patrick at the Bursar’s Office to request a store and add products

  10. Collecting Donations Use UNM Foundation site Already implemented and approved – get up and running very quickly Donations collected, recorded, and deposited into UNM accounts (for your department) Example: UNM IT – David J.
