  4. George W. Bush took office after a close election, which ended with the Florida ballots in dispute and a Supreme Court Case (Bush vs. Gore). The Bush platform included a tax cut, education reform, new energy policies and a missile defense plan. During his first year in office, the Pentagon and Twin Towers in NYC were destroyed by terrorists from Afghanistan.

  5. Bush Foreign Policy Issues: Attack on the United States The War on Terrorism: Afghanistan Invasion to defeat Taliban and al Qaeda extremists. Campaign against September 11, 2001 terrorists seemingly comes to halt as focus placed upon search for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.

  6. Impact/Effects: Although troops still occupy areas of Afghanistan, during his Presidency, the war against terror did not meet the objective to capture Osama Bin Laden.

  7. The Middle East Israel and Palestine There were repeated incidents of suicide bombers and attacks from both sides. Violence delayed the peace process.

  8. The Persian Gulf War: [2002] The war was begun with the purpose of ending the dictatorship of Sadam Hussein and eliminating weapons of mass destruction. Many western nations were not convinced about the weapons of mass destruction and so did not support American involvement in Iraq.

  9. Impact/Effects- Legitimacy of US at stake as no WMD are located. Rest of world cools relationship with US believing interests really involve oil.

  11. Bush Domestic Policy Issues: Cutting Taxes- Tax cuts to wealthy in order to increase money supply – trickle down theory – to jump-start the economy. Most citizens received $300.00 rebates.

  13. Educational Reform- Claiming to be the “Education President,” Bush espouses “No Child Left Behind” legislation will enhance student & teacher accountability by making test score targets and funding schools which do not meet minimum standards/scores.

  14. Social Security - Bush wanted to reform SS by having younger workers choose private accounts instead of a government program. He also tried to reform Medicare. No action was taken.

  15. September 11, 2001 - Department of Homeland Security created as a Cabinet level position to deal with anti terrorism.

  16. Patriot Act • The USA PATRIOT Act is an Act of Congress that was signed into law by President George W. Bush on October 26, 2001. With its ten-letter backronym (USA PATRIOT) expanded, the full title is "Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act of 2001". YOUR RIGHTS ARE LIMITED DURING TIMES OF WAR.

It gives the presidentthe authority to confiscate the property. It broadens the ability of law-enforcement agencies to conduct surveillance. It allows the interception of communications. IT authorizes roving surveillance -- that is, a court order allowing surveillance on a particular person allows officers to use any means available to intercept that person's communications, regardless of where the person goes. For example, an Internet service provider can be ordered to provide information on IP addresses, login times and sites visited.

  18. Hurricane Katrina FEMA did not respond quickly enough. Today the areas of Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana still are trying to recover. Early in the morning on August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast of the United States. When the storm made landfall, it had a Category 3 rating on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale–it brought sustained winds of 100–140 miles per hour–and stretched some 400 miles across. The storm itself did a great deal of damage, but its aftermath was catastrophic. Levee breaches led to massive flooding.
