  3. What is portrait photography? The art of photographing people, in an attempt to show their personality, mood or visual appearance. Portraiture can be shot indoors, in a studio or on location. The shots can be ‘posed’ or ‘captured’. People can be photographed from head and shoulders, full length. Photos can show the person as they are, made up to look different, disguised or even surreal in appearance.

  4. Rankin John Rankin is a British celebrity portrait photographer based in London. He mainly specialises in studio photography where he POSES his portrait work using extreme facial expressions, wild make up or unusual clothing. His work appears in magazines and galleries. His colour work is very saturated with vivid colour and his black and white work is uses strong contrasts in tone.

  5. Dan Mountford Double Exposure Photography Dan Mountford combines portraits of head and shoulder views with outdoor images of buildings and landscapes to create surreal and atmospheric images. He layers images using Photoshop techniques which allow both the portrait and the outdoor images to blend together. The effect creates sensitive and moody portraits.

  6. Photoshop practice editing (Mountford) For this practice edit based on the double exposure techniques by Dan Mountford. I used the 2 images on the left. I made both images black and white. I used select to copy the tree image and pasted it onto the face photo. I used the free transform tool to resize and position the tree photo to be more in line with the portrait. I reduced the opacity of the tree to 50%. I then used the eraser tool set to 100% hardness to shape the tree along the left profile and a 50% opacity eraser tool to blend the tree into the white background.

  7. Thomas Couderc Couderc is another photographer who uses the same technique of multi-layered images like Mountford, with portraits and other subject matter like buildings or animals. His work uses strong layers of colour tints and tones.

  8. Photoshop practice editing (Couderc) For this practice edit based on the double exposure techniques by Thomas Couderc, I used the 2 images on the left. I made each image black and white and clicked on the tint tool. I then moved the tint sliding arrow to pink for the building and green for the portrait photos. I then increased the saturation of the tints. After saving those, I selected the building photo, copied it and pasted it onto the portrait photo. I then used the layer, flatten tool and used the curves to create greater tones and contrast.

  9. Distortion Portrait Photography Distortion photography is the art of changing the subject matter through different surface filter techniques. Some effects are achieved by photographing through distorted surfaces like water or glass. Other techniques are achieved by movement and long exposures or cutting up the print. Many techniques can be achieved through the filter menus of PhotoShop such as wave, swirl, etc. Many photos try to show a mental state or emotion through this technique.

  10. Photoshop practice editing (distortion) For this edit first used the quick selection tool and drew a box shape to the right hand side of the portrait. I then went to the liquefy tool and used the TURBULANCE brush to distort the selected area. I then cropped the image so that the distorted section filled the frame.

  11. Pop Art Inspired Portrait Photography Inspired by the work of Andy Warhol’s Pop Art prints from the 1960s and 70s, these are modern day versions of his style. It uses bright colour and stylised lines to make a distinctive portrait image.

  12. Photoshop practice editing (Pop Art) For this practice edit based on Pop Art, I used the filter menu and selected the cut-out tool. I adjusted the menus to make a more abstract line effect. I then used the hue/saturation tool to add greater colour tone and change into more vibrant colour themes. I then copied the image and pasted it into a new file quadrupling the width. I pasted it 4 times into the new file and used the invert tool on 2 of them and again used the hue tool to change each combinations of colour.

  18. Album Cover Portrait Photography Here are a range of album cover designs which feature portraits in various styles. It is my intention to create a series of portrait photographs for a GATEFOLD ALBUM – front cover, inside double page photos and a back cover with song titles. I will also be using graphic design features on Photoshop to create the artist name and album title graphics. I will also use the design for POSTERS and other promotional products.

  19. Music Artist Logos Here are a range of music artist logos. I will use Serif Draw lettering tools to design my own distinct music artist logo for my album cover design.
