  7. Quotations • Each group will be handed a worksheet with important quotations. You will copy the quotation onto a piece of construction paper and annotate it. Things to look for: motifs, themes, literary devices, things we have talked about in class, word choice… • You will then present your quotation to the class.

  8. “Why, but why would I bless Him? Every fiber in me rebelled…How could I say to Him: Blessed be Thou….who chose to us among all nations to be tortured day and night, to watch as our fathers, our mothers, our brothers end up in furnaces?” (67).

  9. “My eyes had opened and I was alone, terribly alone in a world without God, without man. Without love or mercy. I was nothing but ashes now…” (68).

  10. “He just kept repeating that it was all over for him, that he could no longer fight, he had no more strength, no more faith. His eyes would suddenly go blank, leaving two gaping wounds…” (76).

  11. “But as soon as he felt the first chinks in his faith, he lost all incentive to fight and opened the door to death” (77).

  12. “We were quite used to this kind of rumor. It wasn’t the first time that false prophets announced to us peace-in-the-world…and often we would believe them… like an injection of morphine” (80).

  13. “The last night in Buna. Once more, the last night. The last night at home, the last night in the ghetto…How much longer would our lives be lived from one “last night” to the next?” (83)

  14. “I was putting one foot in front of the other, like a machine. O was dragging this emaciated body that was still such a weight. If only I could shed it! Though I tried to put it out of my mind, I couldn’t help thinking that there were two of us: my body and I. And I hated that body” (85).

  15. “The idea of dying, of ceasing to be, began to fascinate me. TO no longer exist. To no longer feel the pain in my foot. To no longer feel anything…my father’s presence was the only thing that stopped me…I had no right to let myself die” (86-87).

  16. “A crowd of workmen and curious passersby had formed all along the train. They had undoubtedly never seen a train with this kind of cargo. Soon, pieces of bread were falling into the wagon from all sides. And the spectators observed these emaciated creatures ready to kill for a crust of bread” (101).

  17. Choose a quotation • In 6-7 sentences, explain the importance of it… in regard to theme and what we’ve been talking about. Just write the number of the quotation. • You may not use your own quotation • Turn it in when you are done.
