  6. TCM’ VIEW ON THE HEADACHE • Traditional Chinese Medicine does not recognize migraines and recurring headaches as one particular syndrome. • Instead, it aims to treat the specific symptoms that are unique to each individual using a variety of techniques. • Therefore, the diagnosis and treatment will depend on a number of variables: • Is the headache behind your eyes and temples? • Is it located more on the top of your head? • When do your headaches occur (i.e. night, morning, after eating)? • Do you find that a cold compress or a dark room can alleviate some of the pain? • Do you describe the pain as dull and throbbing, or sharp and piercing?

  7. How Acupuncture Works The basic foundation for TCM is that there is Qi .Qi flows through the body on channels known as meridians that connect all of our major organs. According to Chinese medical theory, illness arises when the cyclical flow of Qi in the meridians becomes unbalanced. Acupuncture is the stimulation of specific points which have the ability to alter QI flowing.

  8. Since the early seventies, studies around the globe have suggested that acupuncture is an effective treatment for migraines and headaches. • Recent studies show extremely positive results: • A clinical observation, published in a 2002 edition of the Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, of 50 patient presenting with various types of headaches were treated with scalp acupuncture. The results of this study showed that 98% of patients treated with scalp acupuncture experienced no headaches or only occasional, mild headaches in the six months following care.

  9. In a case study, published in the June 2003 Issue of Medical Acupuncture, doctors found that acupuncture resulted in the resolution or reduction in the frequency and severity of cluster headaches, and a decrease or discontinuation of medications. It was concluded that Acupuncture can be used to provide sustained relief from cluster headaches and to stimulate adrenal cortisol to aid in discontinuing corticosteroids.

  30. METHODS

  31. Low back pain

  32. Low back pain or lumbagois a common musculoskeletal disorder affecting 80% of people at some point in their lives. • In the United States it is the most common cause of job-related disability, a leading contributor to missed work, and the second most common neurological ailment — only headache is more common. • It can be either acute, subacute or chronic in duration. With conservative measures, the symptoms of low back pain typically show significant improvement within a few weeks from onset.

  33. Classification • Lower back pain may be classified by the duration of symptoms as • acute (less than 4 weeks) • sub acute (4–12 weeks) • chronic (more than 12 weeks)

  34. Causese The majority of lower back pain stems from benign musculoskeletal problems, and are referred to asnon specific low back pain; this type may be due to muscle or soft tissues sprain or strain, particularly in instances where pain arose suddenly during physical loading of the back, with the pain lateral to the spine. Over 99% of back pain instances fall within this category.

  35. Specific low back pain Intervertebral disc Infection RA Tumor

  36. TCMEtiology and pathogenesis Trauma Overstrain Deficiency of kidney-qi result in the lack of nutrients in the loins and spinal cord Wind、cold and wet evils attack the meridians Meridians blocked, qi stagnation and blood stasis, obstruction that causes the pain

  37. Treatment • Acupuncture and moxibustion • Cupping • massage

  38. Acupuncture and moxibustion • Prescription:Select points mainly from the • Foot-Taiyang • Foot-Shaoyang • Du meridian • Mainpoints: • Yaoyangguan(DU-3) • Shenshu(BL- 23) • Dachangshu(BL-25) • Ashipoints

Select points from the passing meridians The Bladder Meridian of Foot-Taiyang:Zhibian(BL- 54), Chengfu(BL-36),Yinmen(BL- 37), Weizhong(BL-40),Chengshan(BL-57), Kunlun(BL-60)

  40. The Gallbladder Meridian of Foot-Shaoyang:Huantiao(GB-30), Fengshi(GB-31),Yanglingquan(GB-34), Yangfu(GB-38),Xuanzhong(GB- 39), Zulinqi(GB-41) Select points from the passing meridians

Lumbago caused by cold-dampness: puncture Yaoshu(DU-2) in combination with moxibustion to warm yang and expel cold pathogens Lumbago caused by blood stasis: puncture Geshu(BL-17) to promote blood circulation to remove blood stasis Lumbago caused by kidney deficiency: puncture Mingmen(DU-4) in combination with moxibustion to tonifying the kidney to reinforce lumbar

According to the character of the pain, choose Jiaji(EX)、 Zhibian(BL-54) or Huantiao(GB-30)、Yanglingquan(GB-34) or Weizhong(BL-40), on electroacupuncture instrument, using sparse dense wave treatment, strength to patient tolerance degree.

Improve local blood circulation of the lumbar intervertebral disc, promote the process of metabolism. Elimination inflammation、 edema of nerve root , lysis of adhesions, improve the relationship between highlight and nerve root.

Function:Promoting blood circulation to remove blood stasis, expelling wind and cold, removing obstruction in the collaterals to relieve pain.

1、Mechanical stimulation:During the treatment, due to the formation of negative-pressure in the cup, can make local capillary congestion, erythroid burst-forming autoimmune hemolytic phenomenon, the epidermis presents congestion. Due to class of histamine substance produce, stimulation of various organs to strengthen its function, improve the body resistance. Negative pressure mechanical stimulation by reflex pathways to the central nervous system, modulate neural activity.

2、Thermal effects:Make the local expansion of blood vessels, promote blood circulation, improve the process of metabolism and tissue nutrition state, so that enhances the permeability of the blood vessels and cells , enhanced the phagocytic function of the reticuloendothelial system, is conducive to the absorption of inflammation.

  47. Keen osteoarthritis

  48. Knee osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease of the knee joint. It is more common in people older than 40 years. Women have greater chance to be affected.

  49. Some of the signs and symptoms associated with knee osteoarthritis include: • Pain • Stiffness • Decreasing range of motion • Muscle weakness and atrophy (particularly of quadriceps femoris, muscle on front of thigh) due to inactivity or stiffness • Crepitus • Effusion-increase in quantity of synovial fluid leading to swelling • Deformity
